I've been trying various leather conditioning products for one that won't pull up the mulberry color on my upholstery but no matter what I try (even Connolly Leather Care), the color comes off on the cloth.
Anyone have this problem with your '80's XJ-S? Or, more to the point, anyone have a solution to this problem or a product you use that does not pull up the color?
Is it a huge amount of color? I would expect some color since the leather is uncoated and I assumed dyed throughout the hide. As opposed to many cars that have "painted" leather.
the only time I had this happened was on a 420 Daimler and the previous owner used to clean the seats with cherry blossom shoe shine, its never happened to me on my present car whatever I use (mainly autoglym) you need to get it all off to see what needs doing, recolonizing perhaps
I'm probably gonna use the wrong terms so forgive me. But I did a bunch of research on leather production when I was making some leather panels for another car. Some leather has dye sprayed on like paint and some leather is soaked in dye (vat dyed?) so that it permeates the whole way through. Most new cars have sprayed dye leather and then a clear coat over it for wear resistance (but not as nice).
I have a 99 Infiniti Q45 that has leather that feels like elephant hide and has no color runoff. I also have a 02 996 turbo with "supple leather" that feels like handbag leather and when cleaned the rag is black (leather color). Also have a 06 Maserati that gives off some leather color when leather is treated.
I think that Jaguar probably uses vat dyed leather so color would be expected to be removed. But, just my 2 cents.

It's more than just color on the rag, it's noticeable color off the hide, in places. Oddly enough, the leather in my '84 XJ6 VDP is in much worse condition but gives off no color at all. But it's not red either. I wonder if this is an XJ-S issue or a mulberry leather stain issue.
