Default Convertible roof handbrake switch

I have an 89 convertible. As it is being restored there is no interior. To enable me to work the roof I was wondering if I could do away with the switch on the handbrake by just connecting the wires together and making it a permanent circuit and then just using the normal switch if that makes sense. Not being very electrically minded any assistance appreciated.

If you do that, then the handbrake warning light on the dash will be on all the time. Not sure if there is a difference, but on my 94 I grounded the signal wire to the convertible top ECU, so it thinks the handbrake in on all the time and I can raise or lower it without the handbrake needing to be on.

And your pump is in the boot!?!?!
where's the sump or did you do away with it?
Gas on hills? I guess that would be my only worry. But it might be worth the worry...

I'll be seeking your advise on the coming days and weeks!
Good stuff!

Yep I did this with mine last year. I pulled the end out of the connector and grounded it. That way I can easily revert it back to stock if I ever decide to go concourse lol😁😁😁😁😁. Yeah that's not happening

You wouldn't need to change anything. It's under the battery cover and that isn't moved for judging. So a judge would never see it.

Mines in the cubby being a 93, but yeah I kinda figured they didn't tear stuff apart to look at things. It was more of a joke than anything 😉

I will have a look at mine to see if it's the same. Can the switch at the handbrake be disconnected once this is done or not? Thanks

It could, but there is no need. If you leave the switch connected, then the warning light will come on when the brake is applied and you won't forget to release the brake.

I looked at the diagram for an 89, it is also the black/white wire going into the module. Ground that and the pump will run whenever you activate the switch.

Just double checking it is black and white and not black and green as in other post and I've read diagram correctly. Cheers.

Black/white is the colours of the harness that connects to the top module. The short wire coming out of the module housing to the plug was black/green on my 94, I don't know if it would be the same on an 89

I will have a look, shouldn't be hard to follow the wire. Definitely black and white on drawing. I think. Lol

It is black/white on the diagram. Teasing the metal part of the connector out of the plastic housing is a bit of a art, it's sort of a hook type catch that needs to be pushed back so the metal part can slide out. I used a very small Jewellers screwdriver to do it.

Good luck!

I've had a look at mine. The set up is different with it being an 89 and the pump is under the cubby box. There is a black and white wire that comes in from the direction of the handbrake, I dont know if you can make it out in the photo. My question is would you not achieve the same result by simply snipping the black wire at an easy to get to point and earthing it ? Or have I missed something.? Does it matter which side of the connector its earthed?

You could snip it if you want to. The side that needs to be earthed is the one that goes to the module. The other wire is simply a connection to the handbrake switch, so is irrelevant.

..or neutral.

That's another signal seen by the roof ecu. Again, you could bypass that one out as well if you want to move the roof whilst driving (can be interesting, depending on speed!)

I’ve finished setting all the windows and lubing them all up. Tested each on by powering them up via a battery and all worked great. Thought I’d connect the treble switch up and give the windows and the hood a proper workout. I know the hood worked previously. Plugged it in and nothing. Neither the windows or hood worked. Any suggestions? I haven’t checked the fuse, not sure which it is or where or what size. Does it supply windows and hood? Any ideas? I think it is something obvious. Thanks all.
