Convertible top (Hood) fabric protection?

Convertible top (Hood) fabric protection?
Stop me before I make a mistake. The "Hood" on my 90 Convert was replaced a few years ago. It's the light tan color and it looks brand new.
When I washed the body the first time I was careful not to get the top wet except where it meets the paint on the sides.
It took a few days for it to dry out and left a slight water line.
I want to protect it and help it shed water.
I plan to spray it with ATSKO's Silicone Water-Guard or 3M's Scotch Guard (both available at Walmart).
Is this a mistake...will it darken the color? Or will it keep it looking like new.

Go to you tube and type in the search block "raggtop". It is what I use on my top. Silicone sealers are the last thing you want. They don't have UV inhibitors sufficient to prevent the yellowing of the silicone. The same with ScotchGard. There are a couple of others that members here use but I like the simplicity of Raggtop and do it about every 6 months.
