Default Coolant Bleed Hose Nipple Blow Out

Hello All,

While underway in my '89 XJS, the coolant hose nipple on the LH side thermostat housing blew out, putting me on the side of the road with the temp gauge climbing.

Once the car cooled, I pushed the nipple back in but it was too loose to hold in place. Fortunately I was traveling with a group of friends, in various British cars, so we had a fair collection of tools and ideas among us.
The roadside fix was to rough up the surface of the nipple which gave it a bit of an interference fit when pressing back in, enough to hold it in place.
Between us, we had enough bottled water and melted ice in bottom of a cooler to top off the coolant, bleed the system, and make the 70 mile drive home without incident.

I'm planning a more permanent solution, which is threading the hole and installing a threaded hose barb.

Anyone have this issue? If so, what was the fix?

Yep, many times.

Remove said pipe, its already roughed up from what you say, and apply a smear of JB Weld, and reinsert said pipe.

Drink beer whilst it dries, about 24 hours.

DO NOT drive the car, you are anebriated and will go to jail.

DO NOT use the "Fast Dry" stuff, it returns to "liquid form" somewhere around 100C, and that would be bad for the engine and your wallet.

Never had a repeat after the fix.

+1 n JB Weld. I've used it many times over the years for this type of thing.

But, a threaded nipple is good, too

Cheers

Ah yes, JB Weld!
A much less labor intensive fix as well that'll get me back on the road quicker!
If I let my OCD get the better of me, over the winter I might have a closer look at the threaded hose barb idea.

Thanks guys!

Best Regards,
Mark
