Default Dash Vent Gaskets

Subject: 1996 XJS
Over the last year or so, while running the A/C, when you first turn the A/C on high, tiny pieces of sponge like material blow out the vents on the dash. Especially the center vents. It only happens when you first turn on the A/C. I'm guessing they are pieces of soft, foam gaskets just behind the black vents that are starting to dry rot. The car only has 55K and has been garaged all it's life. But then, it's 27 years old.
Can these gaskets be easily replaced ? What is the best way to remove the vents without damaging them ? Thanks for any help.

Jaguar lined the ducts with this foam to make air flow quieter. My car is nearly 40 years old and just now whenever I start up the AC there are no foam bits... Unless I've been messing with stuff, in which case I again get showered in foam dust.

But it is annoying, especially when one is Dressed for an Occasion and these little bits of detritus cover ones dress-up clothes.

If you ever get the car detailed, they seem to be able to get it all out. I mentioned it one time to a detailer and I never had a problem with the black foam again.

Eventually it’ll all come out.

Its not something you’ll need to waste time or money on replacing.

Thank you gentlemen for your replies. OK. No worries. I'll just use the tiny micro sized tools for my ShopVac and suck out any loose debris. Was just curious. Thanks again.

rgp,

Pollen filters on XJSs? Really? That's the first time I've ever heard that mentioned?

Paul
I fitted them after my wife complained about water splashing her on corners, turned out there was so much junk in there, when I removed the Delanair unit to do the evaporator, I fitted them, they were always listed in part lists

rgp,

That's great, tks.

Although, I've now looked through all the aircon sections and still not been able to find them on the Jaguar parts website? When you get a spare moment, could you point us to the right place?

Tks

Paul

I'll have to check that out on my 96' and see what I have. The pollen filters may have started to disintegrate due to age. What was coming out of my vents were tiny, black colored pieces that looked like sponge rubber.
So maybe it's the pollen filters versus the sponge around the vents ? Or both !! LOL.

Could still be connected with that large space under the wiper grill even if there are no filters fitted...

Tks so much for that!

I would apparently need JLM11696 for my late car. However, strangely, not one of those part numbers is listed by Jaguar on the parts website (even despite now having seen a photo of the box and the part number stamped on it!) I'll give them a call tomorrow and try and get to the bottom of it.

Cheers

Paul

Also Rickr, the evaporator inside the delanaire unit is packed in tight with foam to make all the air go through the evap. But its not a common problem for that to break down, if ever.
