Default Dashboard lights

The dashboard lights on my '89 XJS convertible are very dim. So dim that it's hard to read the speedometer at night. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a dial somewhere to adjust this? Or any other quick fix? Thanks in advance...

Hi Hedman

I had the very same problem on my 1990 XJS V12 which to all intents and purposes is exactly the same Car as yours

There is a Rotating Dimmer Switch 'Rheostat' just underneath the Air Vent to the right of the Steering Wheel (UK CAR) so your might be located on the other side

Rotating this Switch in either direction, will either dim or increase the brightness of the dash lights, although if you find this doesn't work, often caused by lack of use, then rotating this Switch 'back and forth' is normally all you need to do, to clear off any corrosion to get it to go

Though if the lights are still too dim, you could also change the Bulbs for some brighter 5 watt ones, which would involve removing the Speedo Binnacle, which is very easy to do, providing that you take your time and do so 'Carefully' so as not to damage the delicate printed circuit which is right behind it

Here is a Link together with some Photo's to show you where that Dimming Switch is and what Bulbs to buy that you can get off ebay which also includes how to remove the 'Speedo Binnacle' if you want to change those Bulbs for Brighter ones

There is also a Guide in there on how to remove/replace the Ariel and replacing the Ariel grommet, if you ever need to do so in the future

Removing the Speedo Binnacle + Bulb Upgrade + Ariel and Grommet Replacement

Orangeblossom: Thank you, this is very helpful. The car came with no owner's manual, but I figured there had to be a dial to change the brightness somewhere.

If the dial fails you can bypass it and just connect the wires together; a common fix.
