dead antenna
Walked back out to the car (after visiting the auto parts store of course) and saw this (see attachment).
Per Palm, apparently the only thing that's needed is a $15 replacement mast kit, part DBC2200, which one threads down the hole while having someone else turn the radio off so the gear will grab the threaded cable.
But looking at my broken one, it looks like the cable itself is broken, so I'm guessing part of it is still stuck in the antenna motor housing.
Any experience with this?
Thanks,
John

I've been thru this on a few different cars.
If you have a couple hours to spare on a Saturday afternoon you can generally open up the (removed-from-car) antenna assembly to remove the broken bits.....then the $15 replacement mast and cord can be used.
Otherwise it's replace the entire power antenna. I've done that a few times as well. Now you're faced with the choice of affordable aftermarket units versus expensive (sometime very expensive) OEM replacements.
*Personally* I'd try repairing the original, as originals are generally much higher grade than the aftermarket replacements....which in my experience have a much shorter life expectancy.
Cheers

I've inherited a car with an aftermarket antenna and that was the first thing I've removed, the top of it just didn't sit right, wiring even though hidden didn't look right either.
I'd recommend, same as Doug, changing the mast, its very easy and as far as the gears aren't stripped(they can be sometimes) its cheaper to fix it than replace.

I ordered a "new" (aftermarket) antenna for $40 instead of the replacement mast, which apparently is a good thing because the aftermarket arrived today, and it's the spitting image of the antenna in the car.
So, what should be a simple process turns out to be not so...I can't find where the antenna drain is supposed to drain.
I've looked everywhere within the radius of the antenna drain tube can reach, and can't find any obvious holes. Of course maybe the original antenna drain tube was longer and went somewhere else, but there are no remains of the original tube.
A few pics are attached, and for those who have never seen the gear that drives the antenna mast I've included a photo of that.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
John
