But you can't see the tail lights when you're behind the wheel, and driving an XJS is wayyyyy more satisfying than just looking at one

Doug, you serious? The tail lights are one of the best features (aren't they all)! Unless you're talking about a facelift model, in which case I'd agree.

They're both good. The pre-facelift ones on that squared-off boot are more unique and in keeping with the original 1970s design, but the fiddly chrome around the back of the boot is a bit weird. In that sense, the single bold stripe of the facelifts taillights, interrupted only by the numberplate, are cleaner, suiting the overall cleaner lines of the facelift (from which many of the more dated elements of the original were removed).

I must say the facelift models are growing on me just a tiny bit. I'll always rib the owners, though

It does come down to what you like. Ive always been a facelift car, but recently, the tails on prefacelift cars have been looking exquisite. They almost look as if the rear was taken from a Rolls Royce design. Simply gorgeous. My XK has a nice fat rear, but the XJS has a refined ***, no matter what thong, I mean, tailights she decided to wear that evening...
