Filler Plug
Is it a PITA? Considering its an XJS, I've seen worse. On the back of the pumpkin you will see a coiled wire - which not surprisingly, blocks your view. You can take it off using a 3/8" drive socket wrench. Use just the wrench or extension. Filling is another issue. There are two ways:
1. Snake a long hose through the wheel well into the opening or,
2. Knock out one of the plugs on the wall just below the gas tank and use
a slight shorter - that's what I did.
If you are doing a complete refill remember to add a friction modifier - I used GM. As always, you can count on a deal at your local GM dealer - $18 for 4 ounces even the the parts lady laughed at the price.

I have a 1990 XJS V-12. Took it to inspection, asked tech to check the rear differential. He told me "It's leaking". WHAT A GUY! I am trying to locate the fill plug on the rear of the pumpkin. I see a 1/2" drive plug, below and to the right of the coiled wire on the back. I also see a black plastic cap, above the coiled wire, that I'm thinking is a vent possibly? I have seen in the forum that it holds 2.25 qt of lube. The 1/2" drive plug looks too low to allow for that much lube. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds right!

Estimates based on location of the plug notwithstanding, 2.25 quarts sounds about right for a drain-n-refill, yes.
Don't drain the diff until you're sure the filler plug will come out. Just a good habit to get into, if you haven't already, on gen'l principles
Cheers
