Does draining the 'Sludge Tank' appear as an item in any XJS Main Dealer Service?
Tomorrow I'm planning to fit a brand new Fuel Pump, so I thought I would drain the 'Sludge Tank' and clean it out, plus the fitting of a New Fuel Filter.
Thanks to advice from Greg and Grant no need to pay £100 - £200+ for a Pump as they are a common fittment on lots of other Cars.
So I picked one up for £35 with a 2 year guarantee, which should be arriving tomorrow.
But seeing as draining the 'Sludge Tank' is such an easy job and is only held in with four bolts if you need to take it out.
My Question is: Does draining the 'Sludge Tank' ever appear as an item in any Main Dealer Service? as unless I've missed it, I couldn't see it myself.
The Photo shows a fuel pump of the type that is fitted to lots of other Cars and as such can be purchased for around £35.
No idea if it was ever a service item, all I know is that there is a "pre filter" that goes on the pickup tube in the sump tank in addition to the main fuel filter behind the spare tire. When I redkoted my tanks I replaced both the pre filter inside the simp tank and main filter. It's pretty cheap, I got one from SNG. Be sure to grab a new gasket for the pickup tube too, as the old one is certainly a little drier than a new one.
Only changing the sock filter on the outlet spout is a service item; BUT, Jaguar's procedure is to drain the sump tank to change it, so that would effectively flush out any crud in there on a regular basis.

You would think they would drain the Sump Tank, as a matter of course, if only to flush out any droplets of water that may have accumulated over time.

Mine had been sitting for a few years and the guy who had it didn't drain the fuel, so I had rust in both tanks. I had them cleaned out and coated. Hopefully this isn't what you find, but it's definitely fixable if you do! I'm glad I checked them, it would have been a bad day if any of that rust got through to the injectors!
