Also, on the subject of ally bodies, they are not resulting in particularly light cars compared with earlier models. The all up Gross Vehicle Weight of the Jaguar F type manual 3 litre V 6 is listed by Jaguar as 2000 kg! 250 kg more than my XJS coupe HE !

That's a Big Surprise, I would never have thought that but I'd put up with that extra weight, in order to go rust free.
Not of course that I've got any rust at the moment (Lol)

Aluminium being rotproof is another urban myth OB. Ally corrodes like a goodun. A 1970s/80s Aston is just as bad as an all steel Jaguar, or worse, and far, far harder to repair. And the modern Jaguars have ally outer panel corrosion problems, plus structural instability in some cases if anyone is silly enough to offer a sunroof. There is currently a huge problem with the big saloon which is offered with a vast sliding glass roof panel. The sod creaks like the devil and Jaguar are getting very mixed results in trying to fix it. This is not a safety issue, it just annoys the hell out of the owners, but it shows the difficulties of the material. Even the JEC magazine, which is hardly the most critical of publications as far as Jaguar is concerned, have run several features and letters about it and the failure to fix same by the dealers/factory.

It surprised me too, OB, but then again one must never believe the hype in this life, plus, it shows what all the extra junk and gizmos cars are loaded up with these days weighs.

Its all coming back to me now, I used to have an Aluminium Boat and once corrosion set in, it leaked like a sieve.
