NEVER a dumb question in this section.
That will cost you beers when fellow V12 people find where your at, haha.
That is the Trip Computer, so named BEFORE all this new fangled "stuff" was invented.
Basically it gives MPG (L/100), in various modes, Instant, Total, etc.
Its been too many years since mine, but in the boot, RH side behind that loose trim panel, just aft of the 2 relays for the fuel brains of the beast, is a Black Box (cigarette packet size) that has "V12" embossed into it. That is the Interface for that dash unit, along with a speedo signal from the transducer.
Not a known problem child, but I remember??? it has an internal fuse.
Greg will get here eventually,. as he has one in his car, and if its not raining in France, may even grace us with a snap.

Grant 100% correct. It is a trip computer that tells the time, and various othr functions according to the button pressed. It defaults to the time. A little known feature of it is that, if you press the time button when th time is already being displayed, the trip computer will show the cumulative time the engine has been running (ie the time you have spent driving the car) since the trip computer was last reset. On my three week honeymoon we found out that we spent a cumulative several days actually driving to Italy and back!
Loads of good ones on UK ebay. It just can be levered carefully out of the dash and easily unplugged. e.g.:

USA versions may be calibrated for US gallons though:
