Default Electrical advice

Dear All, I have just bought a 92 XJS facelift, I thought it was just the starter motor as it was not turning over on the key, changed the starter motor, still no joy on the key. I can run a live to the starter and turn the engine over, but still no spark? could it be dirty relays as the car has not been used for a while? Thanks for your help, regards John

John,

Welcome to the Forum. When time permits please do an Intro in the New Members Area.

Also, what engine ya got, the real one, the V12, or the other one, the 6 cylinder.

Is the car fitted with an Imobiliser of any sort, as these aftermarket items reek havoc as age creeps in.

Once the engine answer is sorted, I suggest a re-ask in the XJS Tech section, where we all play with this oddity.

I would check why you need to run a 'live' to the starter, it is possible that same problem that prevents starter from working is also preventing the whole ignition from firing sparks. Does the solenoid on the starter click/clunk when you try to start?

First I would check what happens when you turn the key. It should power up a lot of systems, you should hear fuel pump 'buzz'. Perhaps you simply have a blown fuse, or a bad contact somewhere.
Dirty relay could be a problem (more like a 'bad' relay, as you can't really get it dirty inside).

Thanks for the advice, I ran a live to test the starter was working. But on turning the key I don't hear the solenoid clicking? cleaned all the relays I could see. do you know which is the starter relay? and where its sited. trying to find a facelift 4 litre workshop manual. if anyone could point me in the right direction where I can download one? so the only thing that I cant get to work is the horn, door lights and starter, I went round and checked all the fuses this after noon

I have manual at home that I believe include insert for 4.0 models, will check it it has locations for relays.

does this look close to what you have? 1995 Jaguar Xjs Fuse Box Location. 1995. Home Wiring Diagrams

Hi Malc, its the 91/92 version it has two 'dongles' on the key fob which pick up a field. I was wondering if there was an immobiliser? could it be the inertia thing in the foot well?

Sometimes the ignition switches themselves get old and no longer make contact, it's possible your switch is worn out? Something to test if power is getting through it anyway.

Hi all, Just getting to the bottom of this, For anyone with a 91/92 Facelift XJS the relay for the starter motor is on the right hand side of the car, under the bonnet (hood) under a plastic cover, its the one with the white and red wire going to it. On testing the feed from the ignition to the relay there is no power, also the fuel pump is not clicking when ignition switched on, when you hot wire the starter and turn over the engine no spark, I have checked the inertia sensor push the switch on or off does not alter things. I am coming to the conclusion that it must be an immobiliser problem. The immobiliser on the car has two 'dongles' on the key fob, I think it picks up a field somewhere? if anyone knows how they work or a way to reset please let me know, regards to all John

Hi John

There is a possibility that you could have a Bad Earth and there are a Bunch of Earth Wires on the Front Closing Panel and also in the Boot to the Right of the Battery.

But Much more likely is the Fusable Link.

If you look at the Positive+ Battery Wire in the Photo, you will see a couple of Plastic Gizmos, with push in Spade Connectors on each one.

Its certainly not unusual for these to come adrift for no good reason and especially if the Battery has been moved.

If one of those Spade Connectors comes loose, the Starter won't turn over and this would very likely affect the Fuel Pump as well.

So make sure those Connectors are all pushed in tight and Jiggle that positive wire around as that will often do it.

Check the Spade Connectors that go in those little plastic boxes on the Positive Battery Lead, or the Starter won't Spin the Engine over.

Check for 12v on the left terminal post in the engine bay, this is a direct feed from the battery and is the input for the ignition switch, if there is no V then what OB said.

Here is an electrical guide for the 92

Might just go to the basic. Clean the posts and cables on the battery. Clean the ground
cable at the chassis. This process works an amazing number of times.

Hi Guys, Thanks for all your help, it is very much appreciated. Well I spent the day going over the diagrams and car, testing for voltage and continuity as I went. I now have it cranking over a change of relay on the starter and the white/red connection was crumbling so I replaced it and it cranked over,,, but I'm not out of the woods yet!!! I have 12 volts to the coil, no power to the fuel pump, (it does run if I wire it separately) is there a management system or immobiliser stopping this? intermittent fault on display when ignition switched on.. the sport light stays on and it wont crank relay clicks sport light goes out and it cranks, I suppose its a sticky relay somewhere. any idea would be helpful. many thanks John
