Emergency brake warning light stays on

Ok , just got my 95 XJS 4.0 2+2, and I have an issue with the emergency brake. It doesn't work primarily, but also the warning light stays on even when the lever is disengaged. I have had XJS's in the past so I am familiar with the fly-off design of the lever. Is this light simply a switch on the lever, and as such just needs adjusting, or is there something more sinister ? As regards the emergency brake adjusting, this is my first Jag with outboard rear brakes, so is there any special way of adjusting the cable ?
Thanks in advance

If your 95 XJS is like my 95 X300...and I'm 99% sure it is....the parking parking brake cable adjustment is just forward of the differential. You'll see it where the single cable splits off left-right to the rear brakes.
The parking brakes themselves are small drum brakes inside the rear brake rotor. There's an external adjustment of the shoes via an access hole, plainly visible with the hweel removed. It's an old-fashioned star-wheel adjuster arrangement
Cheers
