MMMMM, that would be rare indeed, unless its run without oil, NAH.
Have them check the huge bolt that holds the crank pulley to the crank, they come loose, rarely, but knock badly when they do.They will need to jam the flywheel to tighten it properly.
If it deemed loose, I recommend removing it, and ensure the Woodruff keys in there are still good to use, or the symptoms WILL return.
YES the bearings are accessable with the sump off, but that is a HUGE labour intense job, and I have never had a bearing failure on any Jag engine in all my time.

It depends if it's a rod bearing or a crankshaft bearing, rod bearings are easier ( but not easy) to replace with the engine in the car. For a crankshaft bearing, it's usually an engine out job to do it right.
I'd be very surprised of it was a bearing though, as these engine are virtually indestructible on the inside, assuming they have not been starved of oil. Because of the low demand, the bearings are no longer available from Jaguar, I don't know if there are any aftermarket options.
I'd want to be very sure of the diagnosis before going too much further, just because it's such an unusual failure. The engines are the same as the 1995-1997 XJ6 sedans, so it might be cheaper to find a good used engine and drop that in, then to try and find bearings.

Richard Portale,
I'd also question the likelihood of a failed bearing. I would ask the mechanic what makes him think that is the case, as I've never heard of a bearing going on the crank of an AJ16 engine. AIso, is he saying he thinks it's a big-end or small-end bearing, or a Main bearing? I certainly wouldn't be thinking about a replacement engine yet.
Have you noticed a noise yourself? If so, where did it appear to be coming from? Is it there immediately at startup? Is it better or worse when it is idling or revving, hot or cold engine?
Good luck
Paul
