Default Evaporator, A/C pipes lines making moaning noise

Hi gents,

95 AJ16 XJS

I have had this problem on an of for a while now. My A/C works pretty well, but every so often I get this awful moaning noise while it’s on. I think I have traced it down to the evaporator or the line that leads to the evaporator. I think it might be freezing and making this noise.

I know the car has a thermal cut of switch at the evaporator, and I think it may have failed. Does anyone know if it’s accesible for me to change?

thanks!

The noise seems to go away if I give the car gas. **I think** it’s coming from the Expansion valve. Does anyone have any experience with the expansion valve making these noises?

thanks!

I had an expansion valve make weird noises once when I had slightly overfilled the system. I'd suggest putting a set of gauges on it, and putting a thermometer probe in (or as close as you can get to) the evaporator core.

While you have the gauges on, Put a heat gun on the expansion valve and then report back what temps you have with and without heat gun. Sit in car with heat gun aimed at expansion valve. What happens?

Thank you.

a heat gun? Seems a little dangerous, no?

I have not heard this on XJS specifically, but it is not all that uncommon for an expansion valve to make a moaning noise. Maybe it does not have the correct refrigerant charge in the system, but it probably is the valve itself.

Thanks- I do believe it’s the valve itself. It’s a shame as the A/C performs well, I hesitate to get it fixed, it I also don’t want to be running around with the car sounding like moaning whale.
