Default Fair price for a project car?

Hi all,

I found this 1976 xjs and was wondering what a fair price would be in your opinion:

The owner says this in the listing:
"For Sale is a 1976 Jaguar XJS 2 door coupe, (XJS is the nice lean body style)

With a V-8 350 Chevy Motor and a 350 Turbo Automatic Transmission professionally installed.

Tan Interior, Red outside, with Factory Jaguar Alloy Wheels.

The car has been parked in our drive way, it ran when we parked it and is mechanically sound.

The engine has a 4 barrel carb and a modified cam (Mild) with Electronic Ignition.

I still have the invoice from Arlington Engine Rebuilding for engine rebuilt and radiator work .

There were absolutely no problems with car when we parked it.

The tires are gone.

Needs Headliner, and the paint has faded it needs some love! Car as been stored in driveway for years and is not in running condition."

Thanks for your help!

To be honest....

Tell the owner you'll bring a trailer to haul it off his property for free. He should jump at the offer.

Cheers

Agreed. That car's value is $0.

I think the KBB is -$10,000. That's the minimum amount your going to throw into that car to get it going again.

The upholstery is a mess.

The paint is a mess.

No one knows anything about the engine.

On top of that, you'll spend at least a grand just on tires.

After a $15K minimum resto, you'll have a car worth $10K, so I would say it's value is -$5K as a driveable car.

If the value is under $0 as a driveable car, then you revert to its value in parts as its true value, which I think would be about $1K for that car tops.

If you really like the car then I think at 500.00 you wouldn't loose. For that cheap, worst case you can pull the motor and recoup your money. But unfortunately without being able to start it and drive it really isn't worth more than that. I paid 800.00 for an 88 with a V12 in better shape that I drove for 2 years without spending a fortune. My 90 in great shape costs only 2500.00.
