Fast idle issue but not when cold.
My 95 4.0 has suffered from fast idle, 1200 to 1500 for a while. We have tried to find a vac leak but unsuccessful.
Many times, 1st start of the day, the idle will be normal and remain that way until turned off and restarted. On restart idle is high again.
Not sure if this could matter but the first time I recall the fast idle was after a steep climb on a mountain road and was in it hard. Broke the tranny mount and the sound of it hitting the bottom scared the heck out of me.
Stumped and help appreciated.

Have you done any other work to the car? To me this sounds like it needs a throttle adaptation done. Has the throttle spring recall been done?

Is there anyone within the oklahoma, texas, kansas or colorado area that has the proper equipment to do this?
Have not contacted the local jag dealer yet. Do recalls expire after a period of time?
Car bought with 90k, 3 yrs later now 200k on the clock. MAF was rusted from getting water up the snorkel. Guess from my long drives in the rain. Robbed replacement from my other 95. Throttle body removed and cleaned. Watched it done and was dirty. Water pump replaced. tranny full flush and filter. The high idle was present before the above work done.

When the car is hot, can you disconnect throttle cable ( or make sure there is slack in it) and close the throttle by hand to make sure it's really closing? Also make sure it moves smoothly and easily and isn't gummed up. I'm going by memory, but I believe there should be a 0.002" gap between the throttle plate and the bore when fully closed. A sheet of ordinary copy paper is about 0.003", so can make a substitute if need be.
I'd start by making sure the throttle is really closing, and assuming it is then move on to the adaptation. You can clone the dealer computer if you have to, the instructions are on a massive thread on the site. You'll need an XP laptop and a communications cable ( $600 last time I checked, from Drew Technologies).
