Crank Forging - Group C - TWR For Sale (1990) on Car And Classic UK [C100900]
Those cranks have been advertised for 5 years that I know of. Before anyone lays down cash maybe one of the UK forum members might go take a look to see what you are buying.

In light of the astronomical expense of making something useful out of those forgings, how far can the 5.3 and 6.0 cranks be reliably stroked, and at what cost?

Group 44 offset ground the 5.3 crank for 75mm and bored the std liners for 92mm to get a 6L engine, A 6 L engine can be offset ground for 82mm to give 6.5L , both these drop the BE from 2.3 to 2.1 and then use chevy 6* rods.

Yes Chevy 6" with 2.1 BE There are chevy 6" with 2.0 BE but these are less common and therefore usually more expensive but would allow the 84mm out of a 6L crank.
Given the forgings only save you £200 at the machine shop as opposed to having a billet crank machined and you also have no risk with a machine shop supplied billet, no import taxes or carriage + insurance + agro of getting the crank to the machine shop, they are not worth the risk, The figures do not add up , which is why there are plenty sitting about. I dont know of anyone anywhere who has every got one machined up.

I know someone who welded and offset ground the 5.3 crank for 78mm stroke. It was a lot of work as the cranks are nitride hardened.

I know the people who are selling them. They are well-respected and technical advisors to the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club. I'll even see the guy at our AGM next week, so can ask him any questions that anyone would like to pose about the cranks.

how much do they weight each...?

and should they be bead blasted to clean them up before starting to machine them...?

have they had anyone local buy and have one machined and if so who do they recommend to do this work?

I try to think of some more...

I inquired about these cranks 5 years ago and was quoted 400UK for shipping to Australia. I did a bit of research including shipping and machining. It was not worth the effort in Australia.

By the time I had them machined I could have had a billet crank made.

Great to watch! I particularly like the programming that enables the grinding of the eccentric big-ends!

I guess this is why we can all rebuild an engine at home but none of us(?) have ever made a crankshaft at home!

surely you mean for a road going autos ONLY.... there are some that cast there own push rods and wheels and stuff for their Scale steam engines
and a heisler steam locomotive does have a crank shaft and is a popular engine to show off ones prowess in the hobby...

and as home cad cam develops you will see more complex projects

the XJ13 for example... I expect that in the future some one will take the down loadable drawing of the car and put it into their computer and simply use it with a computer controlled plasma cutter and then just weld and pop rivet it together...

Sweet... and in time and smaller scale CNC machine for hobbyist that you could even make your own Kurbelwelle...

Did you ever have a chance to ask your friend the vendor about machining these 84mm cranks?

Greg,

I spoke to him only briefly when I saw him a few weeks ago. He said then that he only had one left. I'll drop him an email and ask about bead-blasting, machining etc.
