Fuel Cap Key
Here's an interesting one for you guys......when I purchased my 95 XJS I didn't get a key for the fuel cap, so what options do I have? Anyone know where I can get one made? Can you buy the barrel and the key?
I've had a look on the auction sites and a replacements go for silly prices.
As always your thoughts are appreciated.
Cheers

You either need a new cylinder with key
JA-JLM477 - Lock & Key
Or you can have a locksmith repin the cylinder you have to work with a key.
I think option a is the cheaper alternative. It's Part # JLM477
Oh, scratch that, I see that the part is not in stock.
You can remove the cylinder and have a locksmith key it any way you like... you will need the proper blanks though. Perhaps you can find someone selling their old keys. A locksmith can re pin the cylinder to existing keys too.

I've got a half dozen caps with keys for the convertibles from 83-91. If you know if they're the same key type I'd sell one for $10 plus whatever the shipping costs. That's with the key. I don't have any 92-96 XJS's so I don't know. I can't imagine it being different. Some people do ask the craziest prices for some Jaguar parts. That's why I started buying parts cars to keep all my XJS's up.

Reviving an older thread I have the same problem with our 1996 model, my local locksmith can actually make us a key but he needs a key blank so i don't need the whole cylinder and key kit. I'd buy a set (lock with keys) if I have to if it's reasonable but really just need the blanks if anyone knows where I can get one of those?

I have bought them before. I want to say Terry's Jaguar has them, or maybe Welsh Enterprises.
The problem is that I don't recall the part number. JLM744?
There's someone selling one of those on eBay right now, but there's no picture.
There's a long version and a short version of that key and I can't recall which was which.
I took my cylinder apart this past winter and lost a tiny spring. I need to go to a locksmith and see if I can get one from them.

Paul,
As you probably know, your 95 XJS uses a completely separate key for the fuel cap. It's nothing to do with the doors or ignition.
Jaguar keep a record of the key numbers for each car. Just go and talk to your local dealer and ask them to source the key numbers for your VIN number. You'll need to produce proof of identity. Don't know how US stuff works, but in the UK, they can look up the key record for the car at the dealership.
Good luck

the tibbe key is for the Ign. trunk, glove box, and storage area, the door key is a flat regular key...
and the car lot I bought the Jag from had NO, keys because some kid broke in and grabbed most all the keys from the key locker and took them and jumped in a mustang and went for a joy ride... so the keys if they exist are still in evidence at the sheriff office...
glad he did not take the JagUar...
took them two days to get the ign key right... so I could test drive it
door key works
I would like the valet key though... and any fobs that go to this car...
have to wait for the case to clear and the evidence to be released..
the gas cap key is a flat key the door key goes in but does not turn...
I could go to the lock smith here but if you charge 10 bucks and shipping it might be cheaper... than the smith...
I will call them... and see what they charge for making a key up with no key to start with...
~$45 ~$12 a copy there after...

I'd look through Craigslist to see if there aren't locksmiths out there that would do this for less. Ideally, if you did have the money, I wonder if it's possible to replace the key cylinder in the fuel cap with a Tibbe type cylinder...

when they do the gas cap key
I will have them compare it to the door key I have that they made for the car lot
there is a possibility that the very bottom part of the door key (the end of it)
has not been cut and is blank...
if the door does not use this part and the gas cap does...
the fuel cap cutting could be added to my door key giving it a very useful double duty...
that would make me smile...

Did the 1992 model year have a keyless entry option? I added an aftermarket keyless entry/alarm to mine but was not aware they may have been an option.
FWIW, on my 1992 the door key is the flat style and also fits the gas cap. The tibbe fits the trunk lock, the glovebox and the cubby box. Seems strange that the trunk/boot uses a different key than the door, but it does.
