Fuel cap lid locking issue

Hello all,
I have just recently purchased a 1992 Coupe, Canadian Version and am learning as I go along which is fun and of course frustrating at times. My problem that I am asking about today is that when I lock the car with my key, the door, luggage compartment and fuel cap lid all lock, but then the fuel cap lid pin retracts ever so slightly so as to not go in the hole so that it locks. I have sprayed some WD40 on it, which to me would not help as it does extend fully, but as I said retracts, but thought may as well give it a try. I have checked with the lid open as I thought it may be hitting the piece that it should be sliding into, but that is not the case as it still retracts. Any ideas?
Cheers and thanks
Michael
