Default fuel pressure

im wondering if it would be possible to fit a time delay relay to the ign, so when I turn off the ignition the engine would depressurise the fuel system relieving pressure on the system, anyone have any thoughts on this project, it would probably need a diode in the system also.

The pressure isn't held by any electrically operated device. It's held by an anti-drainback valve. You'd have to rig up an electrically controlled valve to dump pressurized fuel into the return line.

I'm sure it can be done.

But....why?

MMMMM, I agree, why?

Most V12's, and others, bleed fuel pressure off fairly quickly.

If the engine is running and the pump is not pumping then that will depressise the system. 1 Good if it decides to self combust under the bonnet when parked up and 2. I'm still trying to close all avenues of very slight (now) odour in the boot. I will not be beaten regarding fuel smell.
I will probably fit a switch to the pump relay supply which would double up as a security item and a lot easier

Reach down and flick the Inertia Switch, that will kill the pump instantly.

Also acts as a security device I suppose.

i have actually fitted a fuse on that which I pull as an anti theft device but I've got the feeling that it also cuts the ignition at the same time, but not sure on that one,
at the moment this is the only way I can get short term odour free boot the problem is always on the high side of the system and when parked, not while driving. I'm thinking I may get a glass filter and fit it, insulated, under the left hand air cleaner at the front and do away with the one in picture. its the second filter this year. with new 7.6mm J30R9 injector hoses. you can just about see the fuse in the 1st pic

The inertia cutoff switch does not kill the ignition. If you fitted a straight on/off switch to that circuit, it would kill the pump and the engine would "run" to depressurise the system, also be a an anti-theft.
I would not put a fuel filter under the air cleaner as that is right on top of the exhaust and I think you would have fuel vapourisation problems, not to mention the danger!
Grant told me the pre HEs had the filter in the engine bay behind the RHS headlight nacelle (I seem to remember). That might be a better place. In the meantime, have you done the talcum powder trick over all the joints in the boot?
Second point, are you sure the Rochester valve is not blocked or the rubber hose to it and the evaporation canister are all good?
Good luck
Greg

I have a direct to atmosphere breather from the canister, but new filter in a plastic bag stops it when the system is pressurised. And the bag stinks but no liqued. I was thing there is nothing in the cavity behind the r.h. front wheel so that may be the nest thing I may think about. Early xjs had the filter around the rh regulator.

Seems like you have proved it is the filter/connectors. Why not try an aftermarket Sytec and new top-notch fuel lines to and from it? Mine has been brilliant.
Incidentally your car looks absolutely wonderful - congratulations!

I think fuel lines and filter that close to the exterior of the car is dangerous. Any small to medium impact could potentially add up to a bad situation. And that's coming from me. I never get allllll SAFETY first like that, but it's something to consider.

I decided to go down Greg's recommendation and purchased this (pic) but with barbed tails. I wonder what the differance is between J30 R9 @ £5 a metre & J30 R9 @ £16 a meter both are on ebay.alsoi have just been in touch with a top hose manufacturer, they advise that the ideal hose size for the 8mm hose tails should be 10% smaller than the tails and recommend their 7.3mm J30R9 being perfect

Maaaaan,,, ain't that purty!? Seriously. I noticed that post a few posts back where that filter was introduced. I have been seconds away from buying it, but stopped as I just replaced my filter a few weeks ago. But it's in my "cart" as they say. I think you're doing the right thing.

When I first came here, thanks to the recommendations of the folks here I ended up with some of this type hose. There are steps above r9. Like a Gates Barricade 30r14 or even higher... You might wanna step it up a bit if smell and sweating in the trunk is the concern.

Not this size exactly but something like this. I bought a whole spool. Didn't know why it made sense when I did 2 yrs ago, but I have about 4feet left today. Its very handy stuff to have around. So again, not this EXACTLY but something like it.

just a quick update, I fitted the Sytec filter with barbed end fittings and 7.3mm id hose the smell has completely gone, it was purely on the pressure side that the crossland filter couldn't handle when stationary, as the tank never gets pressure or vacuum due to the atmosphere breather so it had to be pressure in the dam filter or the 7.6mm hose that has now been replaced.
