Default Fuel Tank Jaguar xjs v12 1987

I have been having some problems with my fuel tank but it never really bothered me i fill it up and it only ever took 12 gal of fuel today i changed the floater to fix the gas light and i noticed that the tank has two sides one i use and one thats filled with diry old fuel. Its a 1987 jaguar XJS v12 i did some research and some models had a dual tank with the abbility to switch tanks on command however my car has no such switch on it for its an older model. Am i missing something or perhaps the previos owner switched the tank with a different model without knowing. I cant find anything on it and im not sure i might need a new tank or not.

The XJS was only ever fitted with a single tank. I believe that some of the cars that Eisenhardt converted to Convertibles were fitted with dual tanks, but not standard factory cars. I think you're thinking about the XJ saloon cars that had dual tanks.

I wonder if a previous owner has changed the tank at some time for a non-standard tank? Can you post some pics of the tank?

Did you mean by saying "two tanks" the swirl pot tank under the battery?
If so, then this tank needs to be cleaned out and the internal filter changed, and the feed pipe to it from the main tank checked; and the external filter downstream of the pump, located behin,d the spare wheel, renewed.

No im not talking about the sump tank i cleaned that out, inside my fuel tank is a divider with fuel on both sides one side is full even on an empty tank and it looks like old dirty fuel thats not being used

I’ve not heard of a partitioned XJS tank. Not that that proves anything.

The Hess & Eisenhart convertibles had a unique tank arrangement as I recall. The details escape me at the moment. I think they had two tanks

Cheers

As far as I know this is unique. Maybe a blockage of some sort or more liekly an incorrectly made tank. Nothing for it but to pull it and swap it for a good tank. I reckon.

Suck the crappy fuel out of the other side, then cut a hole in the divider to allow the fuel to pass through, and Viola extra fuel capacity. Just a thought.
