gasoline odor source?
Hi, I'm new to jaguars and to the forum. I've been working on our 1987 XJS V12 with Hess Eisenhardt conversion that we acquired a couple months ago. I love this car! I especially the way the top almost dissappears when stowed leaving the lines of the car unbroken. It has ~58K original miles and was a 1 owner car. It had not been driven much in recent years, so I'm working through sorting out some differed and poorly done maintanence items. The interior has just been refreshed and looks amazing. I'd like to post some photos but don't see an attachment link. Hopefully I'll figure that out so I can post some.
I'm finding the car a bit fussy but slowly am getting things squared away. The elecrical system complicated though and the fuel system is very "interesting". What the heck were they thinking at H&E when they modified the tank? Lower gas tank, secondary fuel pump, dual gas level sending units and the main fuel tap off of the upper tank?
When we first filled up the tank, we simply filled it till the pump shut off. The system dumped all of the gas in the upper tank over the course of the next couple of hours. Most of it through an overflow line on the left side of the undercarriage (behind the drivers seat area) and from other points across the car. I found that the seals on the lower tank sending unit and sump (I didn't even know they were there at the time) were compromised. I exposed the lower tank, cleaned and regasketed the openings and refueled the car (just not above the vapor recovery unit). No further leaks. I'm still smelling gas though when driving. Not when at a stopped though. It seems to be coming from the lower right side of the car. Maybe related to the vapor recovery line? The bottom of the car is covered in steel plates making it hard to locate . I've read that gas vapors were a problem with these cars. Can anyone offer some suggestions on what to try next? Thanks!
