I have a question about the gearbox related to my '93 xjs 4.0 conv, built in September of 1992. I ordered a new gearbox filter and gasket from Rockauto. When it arrived I discovered that both the filter and the gasket were quite a bit larger than my gearbox could possibly handle. Rockauto wouldn't accept the return so I'm sitting here looking at these two and hating to throw out a new filter and gasket because it's the wrong one. The one they sent says it's for an L6? How can I describe these so I can pass them on to someone who can actually use them? Thanks for your help.

 

I had a quick look at the Rockauto listings. They are mixing the V12 and 6 cylinder applications under the 6 cylinder listing. If it says the trans type for the brand you bought then you can figure it out. The V12 used the GM 4L80E transmission the 6 cylinder used the ZF 4HP22 transmission.

If the pan gasket is basically rectangular, it's the GM application. If it's a trapezoidal shape, it's ZF. Instead of the XJS, look at the XJ6 listings,the transmission is the same on both 4.0 cars (XJS and XJ6).

 

Thanks Jagboi64........looks like they sent me the filter/gasket for the GM 4L80E. I'm glad you spotted their application confusion. They were trying to tell me it was my fault.
