Grease Cup on Stub Axle

Grease Cup on Stub Axle
I have a 92 XJSC and was replacing the front wheel bearings. I removed the hub and was renewing the inner grease seal. When I was reassembling I was unsure which metal cup that goes behind the inner seal was right or left. I checked the shop manual but it does not show these cups at all. I ultimately figured out that the cutout in the cup for the speed sensor magnet dictated which side it had to go on, but wondered why the shop manual did not show that part at all. Was this a holdover from earlier years or an addition to later years?

Depends what shop manual you're using.
The green service manuals (and electronic equivalents) that are commonly sold are condensed compilations. There have been a few different editions over the years. The original manuals (used by dealerships, for example) were published in several volumes (4 or 5 books) to make up a full set. These are hard to find; I've seen only one set with my own two eyes. I suspect you'd find mention of the sensors and cups in these real service manuals....or perhaps a later edition of the green manuals.
I'll add that the Jaguar parts catalogs are often very useful in repairing our Jags. The detailed illustrations are almost an assembly guide in some cases.
Cheers

Thanks Doug. I've looked for a set and suspect that if I was able to find one, it would cost more than my car. I use the disc and print out the sections as necessary. The pictures that accompany the text are not very good at all making it crucial to take photos as one disassembles things. Makes for a very greasy smartphone.
