Smile Guide to Purchasing a V12?

Hello all,

I am new to the world of Jaguars but a neighbor's beautiful V12 has piqued my interest.

The issue is:
It has been sitting for approximately 6 years and as far as I know it has not been started in that time. The fluids have presumably sat for years and she has not maintained the vehicle since her purchase of a Lexus sports car (2006). However it has been garage kept for its entire life and I have been interested in a new BIG project and this would easily fit the bill. i am going to go over tomorrow to look over the vehicle.

What sort of investment is this car worth?

Is it junkyard worthy trash ($0-500)

Or does it still warrant $1000+

Basically, I trying to figure out what is a realistic figure to offer? I do not have the slightest clue as to how much this car should sell for?

Thanks,
David

Year mileage, physical condition. IF the car is good it is going to need a complete recomissioning - all fuids, brakes, seals. The car may be a good one (?) or a huge hole in your garage floor that you will throw your money into. Again, year mileage and condition?

1991/92 Jaguar XJS- V12, under 50K mi
- in his sig.
OP said in his introductory post
Now, I know very little of Jaguars (or any british automobile) especially pre-Ford era. This car, I have only seen it from behind, sitting in the garage, appears to be a circa 1991-1992 XJS-V12 and in good exterior condition. However I do not think that the car has been started since the wealthy woman purchased a Lexus sports car approximately 6 years ago.

personally, if it was a prestine car, it would warrant the 1,000 if you were planning on lumping it.

realistically theres too many variables that are gonna more than likely keep you from fixing the 12. any number of rodents could have eaten the wiring harnesses while in the garage. it happens all the time to cars that have been sitting.

also anything fuel related is gonna be in rough shape. the injectors are gonna be seized up, the fuel lines are gonna be caked with crud, the tank will need flushedf and cleaned, the pump is gonna need replacing. everything cooling related is gonna be in rough shape, radiator, water pump, overflow tanks, bleed off lines, rubber hoses, etc.

not to mention these cars are bad about leaking and maintaining moisture in the cabin, so its likely that there is gonna be a substantial amount of mildew or mold.

Here is my quick guide:

1. Walk away!
2. If "1" fails, smack yourself on the head and goto "1", then goto 3.
3. END guide

Thank you for your responses. After talking with the owner and reading your responses I think it is safe to say I will pass on this one and keep looking. It looks beautiful but with the various leaks I saw, lack of measures taken for storage etc, as you said I will struggle to ever reap the rewards of a purring Jag with this one...

I say it depends a lot on the condition of the car and your skills as a mechanic. The car is not for the faint hearted, but if you are skilled it is a whole lot of car for the money.
If you want a car that is road ready, you will pay a lot more.
