Hand Brake Issue

Wow-finally able to get into this forum and thrilled to be here! I'm a lucky owner of a 1996 XJS 2+2 Convertible (had it now for two years) and I've recently managed to cause the parking brake cable to dislodge. After removing the hand brake unit and getting the cable reinserted in it's proper slot and reinstalling the unit I find I can not get the strike hammer to engage the teeth of the unit to cause the brake to engage. Not that I ever really need the brake but I do enjoy dropping the top and I need the brake to register as engaged in order to activate the top. My question then is two-fold 1) does anyone have a diagram depicting how the internal parts of the handbrake are supposed to fit together or 2) can someone tell me if I could wire an on/off switch mechanism to the micro-switch in essence fooling the brake engagement system so I can operate my top without actually pulling the handbrake handle to set and release? Many thanks to everyone who contributes their years of knowledge and expertise here.
