In the UK, those AJ16 pre-Celebration cars used a black leather gearknob. I changed mine for a wooden one. Then, a few years ago, I had a chance to buy a new XKR Portfolio gearknob very cheaply!

Personal taste, but I don't think it looks too bad in the XJS.

my wood replacement is the closest one to the original wood genuine accessory the car had.
