I removed both the sensors today. Who’s bloody idea was it to use a second clip towards the top of the engine. The cable is fine without it just makes it a ******* to get the old cable out I gave up in the end and cut the plug off and then pulled the old one out with a bit of string attached. The rear wasn’t quite as bad. Both are Marelli so assume they are the original’s . The new ones should be here tomorrow so another day under the car. Shouldn’t be so bad putting the new ones back.

If you thought removing the Front CPS was a just 'a trifle awkward' just wait until you try and put it back!

As this can be a 'Nightmare of Epic Proportions' that took me 'Six Hours of Blood Sweat and Tears' to thread the New Cable through the Maze of everything in the way, up to the point I was thinking that it might be easier to take the Engine out, in order to get that Cable back to where it belongs

Looking down from the Top of the Car, it looked a piece of Cake! especially as I could see a short cut to threading that Cable through but don't be tempted to go that way, as it is a 'Bear Trap' to fall into, as someone made that Cable about an inch to short to plug it in!

So the first thing I did was to sit on the ground and then 'Cry a River of Tears' which I then wiped away with an Oily Rag, that 'The Jaguar Gods' had also decided to leave just out of reach, where not for the first time I was thinking of ending it all and buying myself a nice little Fiat 500!

Devoid of all the problems as well as all the pain, that an old Jaguar XJS can rain down on you, where you not only question your Sanity but wonder what you were thinking to buy such a Car in the first place!

Though having said that the GF managed to get that Wire threaded through, in a couple of Seconds!

Where while I thought She got lucky, She just put it down to Skill and hasn't stopped Smirking about it from that day to this! and so I am desperately trying to find something She can't do!

Although so far with no sign of Success!

Replacing the Front Crank Position Sensor 'The Nightmare Continues'

 

Hi OB. I have string in place ready to pull the new one through and into place. I won’t be using the top clip as I don’t think it’s needed. We shall see tomorrow and I will of course let you all know how I get on.

I also tried the 'String Idea' but the String kept getting snagged up, which made things even worse

Good Luck for Tomorrow, though hope that you won't need it

P.S. I also cut the Plug off to get the old one out, which is a decision I'm regretting!

As there may have been nothing wrong with it, so it would have been handy to keep in the 'glove box' as a Spare

 

Hi guys.
All done with both new sensors fitted. Not the nicest job but not to bad. Car started on the button as always. The sensors measured exactly the same as the old Marelli ones I removed so air gaps should be ok. I measured the front sensor at 0.035” so well within spec. Now I just have to take the car for a run to see if it’s cured. Fingers crossed.

Have now been out in the car a couple of times and so far all seems ok. I have a run out this coming Sunday (Drive it day) so that will be the real test. Fingers crossed it’s all ok. I will report back. Cheers guys.

Hi all.
Just thought I would finish up this thread. I have been out to a car show today about an 80 mile round trip and all is well. No cutting out and I’m sure then engine is now running better than it ever has. I did replace the sensor in the air intake as that was an original part and only as a matter of course. So there you go replace the crank and flywheel sensors if you are still running the originals.
