I will post this again as my last post as a little confusing. O am trying to remove my ski slope on 1 1998 xjs. O opened the center console and removed the two screws on the side. I tried pulling the cap off to get access to the single screw which holds the ski slope. It will not budge. I dont want to try and force it odd in fear of breaking it. It seems like the latch holder for the armrest is holding it from coming off. Am i doing something wrong?
Its been a while since i did mine, but if i remember correctly, you have to pull the tray insert out, then the little plastic "cap" just lifts off revealing the screw. At least that's how my 93 is
It is badges as an xjs and also titled as one. I find it kind of funny that there are so many 1989XJS convertibles listed on line and all of them say XJS, Where are you coming from.
Mines a 91 pre facelift convertible. 2 x screws each side of the black trim piece lift this off and there is a screw which holds the back of the ski slope. You also have to remove the cruse control switch and the lighter to reveal bolts which need to be loosened. Once this is done the slope can be removed it’s tight but will come out.
Rob.

Don,
I think it is because you said it was a 1998, not a 1989 - "am trying to remove my ski slope on 1 1998 xjs."
You'll have to remove the surround for the stereo and climate control knobs. There are 2 capture style nuts which hold the plate to the "face" of the stereo and climate control stuff.
Then, remove the button or insert for the cruise control and the insert or lighter. There are two bolts, you'll need a little light to see them. Remove them.
There might be two more bolts under/hidden by the face plate of the HVAC/stereo face - I could be mixing that up with the XK.
Then, the knob off the shifter and the two little screws (save safe) and the shifter cover should come off...
I don't think there is much more than that. Many cars are in different states of state. I think that all for my 1990.
Then, two hard to yank plugs for the seat controls and DONT forget the brake light warning senor which is hidden and found just behind and in the UNDERSIDE of the armrest console. Requires some contortion and yoga to remove and install. Gotta git in there
Hi,
I have a 1990, 3.6 manual coupe and had to remove the ski slope earlier this year to deal with some sloppy gear lever bushes. So, presuming that you have an automatic, things may be a little different but some tips below on what I found in removing my ski slope in case it helps.
I did not have to remove the radio or any heating / air condition controls. The front of the ski slope just slid under the panel surround to these.
Gear lever knob and surround had to be removed.
Although the centre receptacle bit of the ash trays can be removed and you can see two small screws below, these did not need removing - they just hold the mounting brackets for the ash trays in place.
Prize out the cigar lighter and speed control (or jag blanking plate if you don't have the latter). You can then see two, small horizontal set bolts which retain the ski slope fixing brackets. You don't have to remove these completely, just enough to allow the brackets to slide up past the set bolts.
Remove the two small screws holding the plastic trim at the front of the cubby hole where the armrest / lid locks into.
Now the bit that caused me a problem and from your post, I suspect you have the same issue; the latch holder for the armrest passes through the piece of plastic trim and locks it into place in the metal bracket beneath. I had to carefully prize the latch holder out with a small flat screwdriver going a bit at a time around the two edges. The plastic trim holding the latch holder then just lifts off and you have access to the screw holding rear of the ski slope.
If you look at a picture of the latch holder in the SNG catalogue below you can just make out the raised wedge on the side that holds it in place within the underlying
metal bracket. Pocket Latch (KZL100002) (sngbarratt.com)
Attached below is a picture of what was under my ski slope in case it helps. You can see the left hand shiny bracket the holds the ski slope in place (about half way down by the white wiring connector) and the square hole in the metal support that the latch holder clips into.
