Homelink in your XJS
The lazy amongst us will be familiar with the Homelink option we get here in the US on most modern cars....... Thats the little buttons that control your garage door opener, etc.
I don't think this was ever an option on the XJS, so let's see if we can retrofit one.....
First you need to buy the unit itself. These are self contained units and are available on ebay for around $20
They only require power and ground. And the power doesn't even have to be permanent, so you can connect to any available accessory source or ignition source. (The unit will remember your garage door code even if there is no power going to it).
For location, usually it's in the roof console somewhere, or on the sunvisor. Having a convertible, I don't like having things high up in the car because I leave it with the roof down a lot and I don't want to tempt any sticky fingers from trying to grab it, so I wanted to fit it in a place low down in the car and generally out of the way.
After a little bit of thought, I finally mounted it on the side of the transmission tunnel just below the center console....
I got accessory power from the cigarette lighter and ran the wires up the inside of the console. The unit is stuck to the tunnel using some sticky backed velcro.
A nice easy 30 minute job !
