How much have you spent this year on your XJS?
I know that many XJS owners do most if not all of the maintenance themselves. When I lived in England I used to work on cars I had in the 60s, 70, and 80s which were simpler 4 and 6 cylinder motors, recently I have used a local shop for everything except very basic stuff. I'd be interested to see what other owners have spent on their cars this year or in years past. I'm told my 92 XJS convertible will be ready for pick up this coming Friday, November 22. The bill will be $3,300.00 for injector work, lights and A/C issues. This, I hope, will complete a painful exercise of addressing all known issues including refurbishing the fuel tank and new fuel pump at the cost of $2,800.00 making my total spent $6,100.00 for 2019.
I'm almost ashamed at spending all that money on a car that might fetch $12 to $13k on a good day. Any decent shop is at about $100.00 per hour so it quickly mounts up. So, who else has spent a lot of money on their XJS? Time to fess up.
Stephen
PS. I have a 2006 XJ8 VDP as well to keep fed and watered but let's leave that one for the moment.

Several thousand to the point where the owner of my shop, after I spent another $1900, said he hoped I don't have to spend anymore on that god damn car.
But my god is it worth it, new O2 sensors, front bearings, all top end gaskets and aluminum plugs it runs so exceptionally well. 2.4mpg increase with new O2s and its just so solid and responsive. The owner said the car's sensors were probably never changed and had rust-welded to the exhaust.
At one point E types barely fetched much and now look at the going rates, but personally I don't care its still cost me less than a 2019 honda civic and well a proper Jag turns more heads.

There is a wise saying of shop around until you find a really good example in regards to paint and upholstery. To pay the extra up front will be cheaper in the long run
For me - I totally disregarded that advice, and purchased a car that needed painting and upholstery work.
So my most expensive is the paint - took 2 months in at the panel beaters (I helped out for the first month during my holidays). For upholstery, since mine is not leather interior, it has been cheap so far (but is not yet complete).
So I brought her cheap - by the end of the year, it will be around the mid cost of a good XJS in Australia, will not be on the road though.
It was planned this way - it is my escape from work
Cheers

HAHAHAHAHAHA.
Never ever added up what I spent on any of my Jags, I simply am NOT that brave, or as some have said, STUPID.
I do ALL my own work, always have, and I maintain that "if I cant fix it it aint broken". Thats been tested sometimes, but never broken.
State secret sits well with me Greg.

I don’t keep track. Not even on my daily driver X type. It’s not that I am made of money, it I just don’t see the point, specially for a car like an XJS. The model has not reached the status it will surely one day occupy, so yeah it may be worth 5-15k now depending where you are looking, but I won’t be selling the car, so it’s completely pointless to start adding numbers. I like the car exactly the same wether it’s “worth” 10k or 110k .
that being said , for the XJS between little trim pieces here and there, headliner, fluids, coils, new tires, lost manuals etc, I can guess I am near 2k, not sure.

Front end has had new bushings, stubaxles, bearings, shocks and springs. New downpipes from Simply performance. New front seat diaphragms, but they are not mounted yet, so maybe they don't count ?
I have still spent more on fuel than on parts though, so I guess my part spend is relatively low...

Why, oh why, did I start reading this thread? However, it did cause me to go back and look at what I have spent on keeping this fabulous car in tip-top shape. Turns out I have spent a total of $23,000 over 9 years to go about 33,500 miles. Heck, that's less that 70 cents/mile! But I think now I've taken care of most of the major items. My annual expenditure for the past 2 years had been about $200 - really just the cost of a lube/oil/filter before storing the car for the winter.
My plan has always been to have my last cheque bounce as I step into the grave. It looks like my XJ-S is doing its best to help me achieve that.

Think my bill is around 500euros.(for parts) Bought car late summer, and doing everything by me and myself. I know, there is more money going to be spent because i am already having to-do list... but nothing major in sight. The thing is, even smallest work can generate hefty bill as everyone with these fine vehicles already noticed. Just replaced all fuel injectors electrical connectors with new AMP connectors, set of these costs just little under 6euros/each (set with body, pins, rubber boot) Multiply this by 12.
There is cheaper sets on Ebay but then i need to wait, and waiting is no no when you are on gear.
Nothing was wrong with car, but this 500euros includes things which corrected because i like to keep summer cars in tip top condition and especially in reliable state.
Someone mentioned fuel bill... not the prettiest figures. Fuel here costs 1,50-1,60 euros/litre.

I try to keep my cars in tip top shape and spend probably more than I should on building a stockpile of spares. I'm retired and I figure why not? Besides when it becomes time to dispose of the cars maybe someone new to the hobby will luck out and get two very fine cars for a reasonable price.
