How much was your Jaguar worth new back in the day? (Any model)
Heh guys. Not sure if this has been done before but....
Just curious how much a 1985 XJS went for brand new in Australia back then? Mine was bought new in South Australia. Anybody know?
How about your cars? Doesn't have to be an XJS. Any classic model would be interesting to find out what they cost from new.

I've also been curious about this - the guy I bought my 91 convertible from told me, if I recall correctly, that it was about 76,000 usd new. He wasn't the original owner though so I'm not sure how accurate that is - he gave me everything he had related to the car and that info wasn't there. I thought it would be a simple task to find the msrp on the internet but didn't find much there in a medium short search.

I have a book called " Standard Catalog of Jaguar 1946-2005 " and for each model year it lists the base MSRP for each model in US dollars. So for example my 1995 4.0L convertible had a base MSRP of $ 61,550 but by the time you added a cd changer etc. the actual MSRP was aprox. $63,000. Compare this to a base MSRP for the '95 6.0L convertible of $ 82,550.
My book showed a base MSRP for a 1985 coupe HE 5.3L at $36,000. Not sure how that translates being sold in Australia but at least it gives you a base in US dollars at that time.
The 1991 5.3L convertible shows a base MSRP of $ 63,600
If anyone else wants me to check for your year and model let me know and I will look it up. Here is something that some of you may have never thought about and that is what was the MSRP of the 1974 E type convertible compared to the 1976 XJS coupe?
The 1974 E type V12 convertible had a base MSRP of $ 9200
The 1976 XJS V12 coupe had a base MSRP of $19,000
Yep, you read that correctly. The last E type convertible cost less than half the price of the very first XJS coupe. Hard to believe especially when you look at the price difference between a '74 E type convertible and '76 XJS coupe today.

The 1990 XJS convertible had a base MSRP of $ 57,000. It appears the Collection Rouge added $ 3,000 to the base MSRP at least on the coupe per the book so I would assume this would be the same markup on the convertible which if the case would make your base $ 60,000. Did not say what the " chrome " lattice wheels as a upgrade would have added to the $ 60,000 base.

It just goes to show how cheap the cars were sold in America even after all the shipping charges etc.
My 1994.75 4.0 convertible was £45100 in base form which equalled about $71000 at the time. I suspect that the American spec gave Auto Transmission as standard (perhaps even leather seats?) which puts it at a equivalent of about $74000. So, if the price in America was $61550 at the time, that's a bargain compared to what we paid for our home-built cars!
If only we could buy Mustangs cheaper in the UK than in America!
