Impossible to say with the information given. A well kept Jag is a purring kitten. A neglected Jag is an unforgivng bitch.
Jag 6 cylinder engines can last a really long time if they are well cared for. Or it may be on is last legs. Same for the rest of the car.
I'd be more worried about the transmission, personally.
If all services and repairs have been done as needed it might be in great shape and bring you lots of enjoyment.
ManyJags, though, are neglected. A lot of owners stop repairing things and doing proper services years before they decide sell the car....so you have to be cautious.
(Are you sure its an XJS ? In 1996 only the XJR was supercharged.)

A factory supercharged 6-cylinder, which you wouldn't find in an XJS, should look like this

Yess that sounded a bit strange are you sure it´s an XJS in that case it´s modified
And i LIke modified cars but maybe they are more for poeple that do work on there car´s themselves
Absolutely imposibblee to tell i f the jag is close to it´s death as they will go for ever with the right taken care of
