I need to replace my dead radio
#2
If you remove the two knobs for the hvac system by pulling on them, you should see a hex nut on each post that has to be unscrewed to release the faceplace surrounding the radio. There are some photos in the links below. Once you get that faceplate/surround out of the way, you should see 4 screws holding the radio in place that have to be removed. It's easier if you move the gear shift into a low gear rather than park to give yourself more room. Just be sure you're on level ground with wheel chocks in place and/or parking brake on.

Ok, the old radio is out. I think I'll ask for some help finding a new one. All this blue tooth, etc. is way over my head, I'm old school. All I want is a good sounding, reliable am, fm, CD player stereo. CD player, because I have a ton of them. Hopefully, the installation will be fairly easy. The speakers are already wired up and no equalizer just the radio. I went down to the only car stereo shop in this small town and they had a total of 4 receivers to choose from. Only two of them had CD player and the two that they had have been discontinued. Guess I'll be ordering mine on line. What I wanted to see was if they are all the same size. They have the large touch screen, then the small ones like mine. So, I'm guessing that most radios should fit without having to cut into my face plate. They did not have a pig tail or adapter for my car, so I can either make up some wires as a go between, or hard wire the radio.

Radio sizes (width & height) were standardized some years before your car, they are normally 1 "DIN" or 2 "DIN" ....

Choose a radio that is no deeper than your present radio, because space behind the radio is very limited. Whatever radio you choose will come with a harness attached, which you will need to adapt to your old harness; the car wiring harness will likely be short (and since it is deep in the console, very difficult to work with comfortably). You'll need to adapt the wiring to the new radio, likely by cutting off the wires/connector(s) from the old radio and grafting those old wires to the new radio wires.

Here is an example from a 1991 XJS:

Can't help you much on choosing radio features, but Blu tooth certainly makes sense with today's cellphone and recorded music options.
