Default Ideal Place To Put A 'SAT NAV' in an XJS V12

Hi Guys

Looking for the ideal place to mount a SAT NAV in an XJS V12 as I would prefer to have it either low down by the Stereo or Shifter rather than stuck on the Windscreen

Thoughts on this please Guys

Please do forgive me for not answering your question first , because it’s not what you asked and it’s none of my business, but why would you need one of these things and why would you want it in your car? A new head unit with navigation would suffice, and as a last resort maybe something to hold your phone. I really don’t mean to be sarcastic at all so apologies in advance, but this is like wanting to install a deck CD player in your car in 2021.

If you really do want it, I would suggest somewhere in your windshield where you can’t damage the leather appointments. But do consider a telephone holder instead.

Do they make one that can be combined with an 8-track?

Hi Mac@Spike@Vee

Cheers Guys!

Sorry But...........!

The Phone idea is a Great Big No! No!

If you get caught looking at your Phone and they think you were making a Call or sending a Text 'It's Game Over'

Anyway I've found the perfect place, Suction Mounted to the 'Ski Slope' just behind the Shifter

Depends on where you are at. Here if it's mounted and being used as a hand free device that's OK. As long as it's not in your hand.

Bottom corner of the wind shield (design if you are rhd or lhd)

Or get one of those lenses that make it look like a hud on your windshield

Glad you found a good solution.

Given the topic, I should mention a feature of the Apple Watch that might be helpful in this type of situation. If you use Apple Maps, it will send the turn by turn instructions to your watch, which is easier to glance at than the phone, and sends a haptic reminder to the watch when it is time to turn. I didn't know about this feature when I bought the watch, but it's pretty slick.

Bit late Alex, time zones SUCK.

I found the best place in ANY Jag, THE WIFE.

SHE knows exactly where you are going, and tells you more times than any SatNav unit.
Even WAY before you get it wrong, SHE KNOWS, and tells you the mistake that is yet to take place.

Not sure what the UK has, but we have things called roads, white line in the middle, go from point A to point B, always worked for me.

JUST KIDDING Alex, ours are mainly DIRT, no white lines.

I still use road maps and a street directory. Is that silly or just showing my age?

Forums are quiet, we need some humor in these times.

Like the others, even having the phone in your lap, in sleep mode, while being charged via the car, is a $600 fine. Holding it in your hand, lock you up, give the car keys to the Govt.

Hi Grant

They are really strict on that sort of thing here in the UK and if they catch you even looking at a Phone then you are Toast, even if you are using it as a Sat Nav so not worth taking a chance on something like that, although you are ok with a Standalone Sat Nav

The GF is as mentioned an Ace Navigator and should probably Audition for doing a Sat Nav Voiceover

As I really get an ear bashing if I take a wrong turning, in the kind of language that is unprintable here!

So after doing some experimentation, just behind the Shifter on the Ski Slope seems the perfect place

My center vent is blocked off so I have a phone clip magnet in there. The back of my phone has a low profile steel plate attached to it so when I go into the XJS, phone attaches quickly via magnet. When the phone comes off, the magnet mount is almost invisible. Keep it simple

Hi Brewtech

Although I thought about a Magnet, I was a bit worried that the Magnetic Field would trash all the Software that is inside the Sat Nav

GF reckons Velcro could well be the answer, as I'd like to take it out of the Car every time I go to the Garage for Petrol

I get why you would think this, but its an electronic device, no different than a cellphone. It wont harm any navigation capabilities, or software. Otherwise my phone would be wrecked, and I wouldnt be able to simultaneously be on a call, have directions being called out by Waze, all while making a search on google for “gas stations near me”, and having a news headline banner compete for screen space with a text that beeps in just to inform me that the person I’m talking to on the phone is thinking of me.
Im sure your Nav system will be ok from any civilian magnetic field thrown its way. Let’s do it!

The technical term for this is "nagigator" or "nagigation system"

Everyone has to decide for themselves what the best place is.

Hi Leo

I have a genuine admiration for people who do that stuff because I have a hopeless sense of direction but now I have a Navigator who doesn't answer back!

peace at last!
