I'm sure you know that there is a special Jaguar tool to do this and that's the recommended and safest way.

But I don't have the tool, so I do it with threaded rod. I've attached a picture (or tried at least), hopefully it is self explanatory. This is an X300 spring but principle and approach is the same.

3/4" threaded rod mine is about 36" long (you don't need it this long 16" is enough)

The long bit in the middle is a bit of gal water pipe cut on an angle I made the large washer to sit against the lower spring seat and the bit of pipe.

The rod goes through the center of the spring with a nut and washer on top and I use vice grips to stop the rod turning. Cost me about $15 from Bunnings (like Home Depot).

edit just saw you in Ozzz, where abouts are you?

Is that due to the curve in the spring?

When you install the spring, when it is seated on the subframe at the top, with the spring pan in place but before compression, the spring and pan are at a considerable angle to the lower wishbone, as it is hinged about a point well above the extended spring's end. This angle gradually diminshes as the spring is compressed, but is never 90°. The effect is that the inner side of the spring pan is always trying to open up the angle as it is more compressed than the outer side, so the angle cut on the centre compressor piece forces the pan into the correct position relative to the lower wishbone, as the spring is compressed. The JEC tool, which I use, has a ball-shaped piece in that location, to achieve the same effect.

ANOTHER South Aussie.

If you are SUPER NICE, I have the GENUINE Jaguar front spring instalation tool in a bag in the shed.

PM me on gyfrancis(at)adam(dot)com(dot)au, if you are interested.

The car will need to be super high, or the subframe OUT to use this tool, as it is designed for a car up on a hoist. As said, that centre bolt is looooooong, and I am NOT cutting it for anyone hahaha.

Further edited to remove the underlying html tag which still contained the real email address.
