I last did a complete flush of the autobox on my AJ16 5.5k miles ago involving 5 changes of the fluid plus a change of the filter and a clean of the sump. Since then I've done a drain and refill of the fluid every 1000 miles which usually removes about 2.6 litres of the total of 9 litres that are in the system inclduing, gearbox, torque converter and oil cooler.
Today, I decided to see what was the absolute maximum that one can extract without removing the sump or oil cooler pipes.
I started by inserting an extraction tube down the autobox dipstick tube. Using a compressor-driven extractor, I got 3.2 litres out.
I then removed the sump plug (not always fitted on these AJ16 boxes) and also the dipstick / fill tube connection to the front of the box. I then alternatively jacked up the front and rear ends and got another .4 litres out giving a max drain of 3.6 litres.
With my regular change regime, the colour of the fluid that came out was almost indiscernible to the new fluid I put in!
So, with this technique I can now change 40% of the fluid without dropping the sump. A good day all round!
