Greg and all...

I got the lock fixed. Working perfectly. I pruchased a new outer latch unit from Jagbits and it installed without a hitch. Before I installed the new one, I compared it with the old one. What actually happened is a tiny roll pin that holds tnsion on the spring in the curved slot in the back of the sealed unit ;had dropped out. Must have worked loose, so the latch would not retract when you used either the outer handle or the inside door handle. Just for the heck of it, I pressed the spring back into postion, re-installed the roll pin....and the latch functions just the way it is supposed to. Of course, I did not reinstall the old one even though it functions perfectly. I just do not want to have to repeat this whole process again.

Thanks again to all who gave advice.

I know this is kind of an old thread but others like myself may have needed to refer to it for help. What I found in my case was that the door handle mechanism was stuck halfway and would neither fully lock or unlock. What I ended up doing after looking at Gregs pictures and note number 7 where he shows the post that needs to move upward to unlatch, I noticed that it wasn't moving and I created a "tool" to move it. What I did was take a 5 gallon bucket handle which is relatively stiff, straighten it first and then bend a short 90 deg leg on one end. I hammered a flat chisel like point on the short bend. Then with much difficulty with the window down and a flashlight to peer in at the lock mechanism was able to hook the bottom edge of the pin that Greg points out and pull it up to release the door. Then I was able to remove the door card to expose the whole assembly and free it up with some penetrating oil. Problem solved without having to remove rear trim and shoulder belt retractor to get at the latch screws. Hope this may help others that have a similar problem with a jammed door lock assembly.
