Default Just in case anyone was wondering......

......you can fit a single DIN DVD player with 7" screen into an XJS without permanently modifying anything :-)

I had 2 main concerns before I tried this out...

1) Due to the fact that the trip computer panel juts further out of the dash than the radio slot, I knew I would have to have the new stereo pulled out of the dash a little bit to allow the screen to come out and be vertical. This turned out to be easy to do, and the unit doesn't look like it's sticking out too far when the screen is retracted, ie

2) Would the screen clear the shifter when it was in park ?

Hold your breath and watch this.....

Amazingly it clears it quite easily.

This unit also supports a rear view camera so that'll be the next update.

Thumbs up

Thanks for posting this. I would have sworn that one, or both of those potential problems would have prevented the use of a flip up screen.

Good job!

I am jealous too!!. I seriously considered a flip out unit, but ended up buying an Alpine CDE-HD138 BT. Yours looks really nice and compliments the interior. Mine is coming in tomorrow. Hope it blends in as well as yours.

@Spikepaga

Thanks for the compliment. I looked up your Alpine HU specs..... it will be awesome. I am not a major audiophile but I like shiny things, so the flip out screen idea attracted me..... also I thought it was going to be really difficult to do and I wanted a challenge. I also couldn't believe the price of the unit I bought..... $179... so cheap

Thanks! I thought it was that one. What ls nice about Amazon you can use credit card miles to purchase items
Please tell me, is this a drop-in; plugs match etc or are there other modifications?
How did you handle the unit moving further out towards the shift lever? I am really good at instals and modifications, just don't want to reinvent the wheel
I plan to use the rear camera for the front of the car to protect the spoiler when parking head on
looking forward to your reply......Afterburner

Went ahead and purchased the unit, but did not purchase an additional harness, if there was one? Did you need one in your installation?
Looking forward to your reply........afterburner

I Guess I'm too old to get this.

My Jag isn't my living room, nor an RV...I'd rather drive.
But...to each his/her own. Enjoy!

Gosh i'm 86 and not to old to understand. Don't know how you knew I had converted my XJS to an RV. Put a microwave in the glove box, a small refrigerator (with freezer) in the console and a king size bed in the backseat/trunk. Thinking about a future conversion to turn it into a mobile restaurant. Will contact you later for your approval on the plans. Thank you for your opinion!

@afterburner

My car was molested by a previous owner so I had no connector plug, just a whole bunch of wires, so I just solder connected everything.

To get the unit sitting slightly out of the cage to enable the screen to flip up clear of the trip computer I was able to achieve this by bending tabs on the existing cage to stop the stero going all the way in. To do it properly you should probably fit a bracket at the back of the stereo that holds it in position, but I didn't do that. Once I had it in it was a snug enough fit to stay put so I left it at that. I wrapped black electrical tape round the exposed silver casing of the stereo to make it blend in. I know this sounds very hodge podge but it worked out well and looks fine.

I like the idea of using the camera to monitor the front spoiler........ I still haven't fitted my camera so this could be the motivation I need to do it !

@Eyeteech

Although the screen is a bit gimmicky, it does actually have some practical merits. The screen is a touch panel, so you control the whole stereo from the screen, which has big buttons with pictures on them, which is much easier than fiddling with the myriad of tiny buttons on the stereo front panel itself.

To Sarc
Thanks for the info. The unit has not arrived yet, but your input was helpful. I probably will follow your plan.
I would like to know how you handled the electric antenna; was there a separate control wire for that function?
I am going to mount the license bracket TV camera on the front, and control its function with an on/off switch

To SARC
I have been all over the Jaguar forums looking for a radio wiring color code for a 1993 XJS coupe or similar model. Also have Jaguar manual and that's a dead loss; no help at all. I really could use some help on either finding the car's wiring color code on line for the radio, or a copy of the car's code you used for your installation
When I bought the car I received an extra radio with a white 13 wire plug that has the car's wiring attached. surprisingly there is no red wire for power, but there is a heavy black wire that I assume is ground. in addition, there's a round socket on the left rear (not for antenna) that I have no idea its use???
Afterburner

If you can't help, I understand and thank you. If anybody else out there can help, it would be appreciated

@afterburner

What year is your car ?

(It's a good idea to add your year and specification into your signature so people don't always have to ask)

I have wiring diagrams for all years of XJS. Just tell me the year and engine

Assuming your power antenna works currently, the power acoustik has an antenna trigger wire that you connect to the existing wire in the cars loom, so no issues there.

EDIT : I just re-read your post and you told me the car year, sorry..... searching now.......
