You're not wrong about that. But while the comparable XK8/XKR is certainly not lacking in the luxury department, with leather everything, a tree's worth of wood, premium sound, gizmos and gadgets aplenty, the Aston's just take it up a whole other notch. Enough at least to be noticeable and "justify" to their customer base charging 1.5x-2x more than the sister company's offerings at the time. There's an old Top Gear video floating around of Tiff Needell thrashing an XKR-R concept and comparing it to the Aston DB7 which demonstrates exactly what Jaguar was capable of, but never allowed to do, due to Ford-era red tape.

Also, Jaguar's USP has always been very good value pricing. It does not matter in the market, AT ALL, whether a Jaguar XK is a better car than an Aston. People will just not pay Aston prices for any Jaguar. The DB7 is basically identical to the post-XJS XK8, but with a supercharged 6 in it, which is not the most refines of motors. The prices it commands were and are way higher than the Jaguars.

Don't be too hard on Ford. They paid 2 billion for Jaguar (about 10 times its real value) and then they pumped about another 6 billion into it, and lost the lot. Without Ford, no Jaguar, that's for sure. What ford did do was to vastly improve Jaguar's car and production engineering. What I am waiting for is to see what Jaguar's next generational set of models will be like now it is solely down to TATA (the current owners) to develop them. Current models are all basically all results of the Ford-ownership development pipeline.

So a Jaguar is the saviour of Aston Martin...

I see Ford and Tata in different perspectives.
1. Ford wanted a big time world name. First choice was Ferrari. Enzo turned them down.
Ford honcho got po'd. Put the Ford guy's and $'s on the line. Objective, "whip his a... at Lemans. GT40 powered by a sturdy "old tech" NASCAR 427. And some pricey "shoes" to drive 'em. 1.2 &3 !!!
2. Jaguar. Surely a big time world name. Oh, s..., antique factory and dam... near no quality control. $'s fixed a lot. And production engineering know how.
3. Enter Tata. Jaguar engineering and production skills as good as or better than theirs. Money not so much. Add TATA money and enter world class car making.

I do not wish to sound pessimistic, but I have a feeling that my generation (post war bulge babies) are the last that had the Jaguar fairy dust sprinkled on them. Most people in their 40s just do not see a Jaguar in the same light as we do.

Jaguar in Europe
2016: 67.134
2015: 39.383
2014: 28.796
On top of that come all the US models and ROW though ROW is hard to determin...
Jaguar in USA
2016: 31.243
2015: 14.466
2014: 15.773
I think that those numbers show some massive growth just for Jaguar.
JLR as a complete group just passed the 500.000 units in 2016. Obviously you won't be seeing 300k units made by Jaguar, but the brand is growing massivly and undeniably...
And here the figures from JLR...

Greg and Daim:
Too bad, or is it ?
1. Over a decade or so, before I retired, I represented an insurance company client at a judicial "Settlement Conference". My client's insured was a wealthy Marin County lady. Her spoiled teen daughter wearing stylish clods drove Mama's bimmer. On SF's famed GG bridge she "rear ended" an Irish lad on his Buell motor cycle. He was on hs way to work as a tech at a big time Jaguar dealer. Oh, me, only $'s to talk about. And my female colleagues were drooling over him !!! And I got it, not only good looking, but a genuinely nice guy.
In a side bar, he admitted, that once on the lift one Jaguar badged critter was the same as Ford's Taurus !!!
And, that in past years, half of the dealer's repair floor space was for Lump conversions !!
An amicable and reasonable settlement was reached. My client and another one or more funded the purchase of an annuity. The Irish lad received a guaranteed periodic
payment.
Oh, no more two wheeled critters for him. Four at a minimum !!
I and my client were pleased. My gal colleagues, not so much ! Or were they?
Afterwards.... ???
