Default Long Hiatus A Hopeful Return

Hey everyone,

I’ve taken a several year hiatus after being thoroughly beaten down by this 1991 XJS v12 that we inherited. Long story short, I with the help of a fellow Jag Forums member did a lot of work to this car and got it on the road. It lost a sensor (crank position i believe) and i let it sit over the winter. After uncovering to get it back on the road after countless hours of work i discovered a family of rats destroyed the wiring.

So i left it as is. Since 2014 or 2015. We hauled it to our new house and put it in the garage. I’ve made up my mind that I’m going to do the LS swap. I’ve been looking at Jaguar Specialties. I’m curious if anyone has documented the entire process in the form of a write up or a manual. Does that exist?

thanks in advance!

It's your car so you should do what you want; however, I don't see how an LS swap does anything to address the rat eaten wiring. This might not be what you want to hear, but I would think it will make that issue even more complex. From your description, it sounds like there is nothing wrong with engine and you've already put so much work and effort in getting it sorted. The LS wiring harness is going to have to plug into the factory wiring, and I can't imagine the rats were polite enough to only eat wiring that would get replaced in a LS swap.

You've come this far, I would think focusing on the sole problem of the CPS and wiring would be more straightforward and productive. If you don't have confidence in your EE skills to address the wiring, it's only going to be harder and more mystifying adding the new dimension of an engine swap. SNG Barratt sells many of the wiring harnesses for the XJS so you might compare the costs of new harnesses versus new (or used) engine, trans (hey if your doing the LS you'll be unhappy with Turbo 400), possibly diff, conversion kit, conversion harnesses, etc.

Or look at this way, if you have the skills to successfully pull off a LS swap that you will be happy with and want to keep for a long time, you have the skills to fix your V12 and factory wiring.

Good luck with whatever path you choose.

Be a man, not a mouse. Get the V12 roaring again.

Welcome back. Sometimes you've gotta take a step back (and a couple of years!) to gain perspective. Jaguar Specialties is about fifteen miles down the road from me. I met the owner and he had an LS swapped XJ6 X300. You should follow whatever path you want but I'd bet it will be easier to fix the wiring than do an engine swap. Best of luck.

Thanks for the replies. I understand the purists with a respect for the Jag history. This project isn’t an issue of what’s easier. My mind is 100% made up that this swap is happening. Just looking for Resources.

Just for the record, my recommendation wasn't coming from a purist's point of view. Just speculating on what might be the quickest and cheapest path to getting back on the road.

Good luck on the swap.
