I usually prefer black wheels to silver/metal or chrome. Especially on a car with a contrasting body color, like the red one, goes great with the blackened taillights. I have to agree those wheels are not the best looking though.
Ok these are the snow tires on steelies from the XJR--they're just on the XJS to store it while I'm having new tires mounted on the lattice wheels. They are 1/2" too tall being 225/60-16.
Incidentally, I am removing BF Goodrich Radial TA 235/60-15 that were installed early 2010 going by the date codes and have not much more than 30,000 km on them (~20K miles). There's little tread wear but cracks have appeared all over the tires in the past year. I'm replacing with Cooper Cobra GT in the same size because they are rated higher in most categories by Tire Rack. I have not found any other alternatives except a Mickey Thompson that doesn't rate better than the Goodrich and is a lot more expensive. It looks like a muscle car tire to me.

Greg,
I'm not a fan of black wheels on XJSs but hey, each to their own. However, I do think the 225/60 16" tyre is just right in the arches. And it was the size that Jaguar moved to the year after your car. I subsequently moved mine to 225/55 but the 225/60 is very period and looks right.
Don't like it, looks like a cop car or something out of MadMax movie.
Looks like the wheels on my tractor.
When I was a kid, anyone who had black wheels was assumed to have been poor because they bought the base model of whatever. To keep from looking poor you at least bought the next trim level up to get beauty rings or a hubcap of some sort. Consider though, when the car is in motion, a fancy wheel is just a blur, thus $1,000 a corner fancy wheels in solid black will actually look no better than those steelies on the freeway.
When I first got the car in 2011 I showed it to a 30-ish colleague whose only remark after "cool" was "are you going to get new wheels?" No, I never intended to partly because this car is Sportspack-equipped and the 235/60-15 on 15 x 6.5 Lattice is part of that.
But I have already decided to set up a little powder coating operation this spring and my first experiment will be on a set of 15 x 7 Teardrops. And my new 235's are on the way. So maybe I'll put the tires on them for the black look. I don't think I have seen Teardrops on an XJS (I really can't picture it) but I'll use them because I have them and they're proper hub-centric fit.
I also remember plain black wheels on the lower-cost trim levels. Hasn't been like that for decades though and now black wheels are very popular for what it's worth. I'm just playing around and found that I like the look against the red.
Any ideas how this wheel will look in black on a red XJS? My photoshop skills are er...undeveloped.
