Buy the car, 2k delivered, non molested, 75k on it. Original and complete, sort the brakes, tune it, polish it and enjoy it.

I believe the 6.0 went distributorless.

I think there are 12 coils on that thing.

The choice for owning the v12 over the i6 has always been, first and foremost, having the space and time to work on it. It is not nearly as accessible as the i6, therefore the maintenance on that engine will take much more time.

I'm not trying to say that the i6 is maintenance free, or closer to a "set it and forget it" car, but a 10 minute spark plug change on the i6 will take you hours on the 12.

As I've said before, if I had a garage, I would be very tempted o get a 12, really just to say that I have owned and driven a v12.

One of my '89's is the same color. It looks great.

If the car you are looking at is not rusty then its definitely worth serious consideration.

For the most part, a convertible will always be worth a bit more than the coupe's so you should expect to pay a little more. His asking price is not crazy. There is room for negotiation.

The 6.0 went distributorless on as installed in the sedans. As installed in the XJS it was Marelli to the end

Buy the original, 75k mile coupe for less then HALF the price of the convertible with brake dusted wire wheels, leaper (yeah, I went there&#128563 and almost twice the miles on it, for over double the price? Am I missing something?

Then again, I don't like wires, leapers, convertible OR gold paint. Not fond of brake dusted front wheels either! But that's just me😁

If you know about it and stay on top of it, yes, absolutely.

I suppose I mentioned it because I still see posts from XJS owners complaining of a strange power loss that coincided with red hot cats and the smell of fuel. Or worse. So I thought it was still worth mentioning.

Guys, I drive a mean bargain but finding a good XJS cheap right now is not hard. They are not in fashion and the prices reflect that.

But yeah, $2k for the coupe might not be bad. Still, if you're patient, you can find one for free (or peanuts).

I would definitely buy it. I rebuilt the brakes in my 89 xjs and most of the rear end for less than $500. Parts are available, it's just time consuming. I have a post on the brake portion in the how to section. BTW, the lattice alloys are worth at least 125 each, the interior, is probably worth 800 or more, then there are the other parts if you decide you no longer want to work on it. I just bough an 89 xjs 2 door coupe without an engine with the same afw interior in the hen (green) exterior. So I do have the brake system and other parts to sell when I get to taking it apart. I bought it for the lattice wheels, original radio, interior, bumpers and lots of other great parts in great condition.

Julpums2313, here's another perspective if you're willing to broaden your search a bit for the right XJS. I have pics of it floating around somewhere in the condition I purchased it. I think it was around $3400 with tax, title, and license. Sagging headliner (cheap), cracked ski slope (cheap), some oxidation of paint on the hood (cheaper to buy a new hood!). Drove it from Tennessee to Houston, TX.

I broke the kraut, heinie, bosche, want to take over the world again, ZF tranny in my 93, so I ripped out that weak sister AJ6 6 cylinder motor (AJ16 motor was at least bearable), and threw that queen mary want to be, oversized, over built engine away! I put a small block chevy with a 700r4 that could handle my shifting in it. not to mention that a small block can easily make as much horsepower or more as that boat anchor V12 ever could. do yourself a favor, buy it like it was a non running jag. tell the guy you're gonna replace the motor, and that you're looking to pay a donor car's price, and then do so. much better combination and easy to do.

NO is just been hard to get a hold of the owner.. So I found out this person impounded this car and has been sitting for a long time . The seller wont even give me his phone number only email communication.
