Default Magnetic pickup at rear diff, what for?

I have magnetic pickup where drive shaft bolts onto the diff. My car is '82, with manual speedometer, no ABS and no trip computer (thank god, what an ugly thing it was). So, where does this pickup go and what does it do?

Second question, there is only one electric connector that comes out of TH400 automatic gearbox, it is one wire, where does it go and what does it do?

Thanks!

Just a guess, but maybe it's the cruise control sensor.

Mish, I think it must be the kickdown switch wire that you will find goes to the throttle cable switch.

Sort of. It's the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). It provides a speedometer pulse for the ECM, Speedometer, and cruise.

If an early 80s XJS/XJ6 has the driveshaft sensor for the cruise control then it also has the old fashioned cable driven speedo.

When Jaguar went to the electric speedometers then the cruise control, trip computer (when fitted) and speedo worked off the same signal.

Cheers
