Al,

Lovely-looking car! Great spec (even the 3 keys) and only 100 cars from the final car of production.

Good luck with the purchase.

Default What do you think!!!!!

Upfront: I have a 1996 XJS Celebration with.111K miles, Snowdrift White w/Cranberry Convertible Top and Coffee Interior.
All Original …….Can’t. Be too many of these around!!

I would be happy to submit as a guinepig test case

This is intended for coordinators and all members.

After spending some time on this subject…(what is or isn’t the perfect XJS), I would like to kick around the idea of a new “Platform” for discussions.

How about a platform where interested members submit pictures, description and history of their vehicles.

The general idea is to get some consensus of “ VALUE” based on the collective wisdom of this forum. (Value isn’t just Monetary)

There was a program on TV called …. (WHAT’S MY CAR WORTH) categorizes vehicle as

A. Usually trailer queens or barely driven
B. I believe driven class
C. Not sure about this category????

Basically gives monetary value

Anyway you get the idea.

1. All members are critics with their own opinions… ( you may need some thick skin for comments by others )
2. If you are trying to sell….this could be helpful
3. If you need ideas to improve….This could be helpful
4. This site would not be intended on specific repair, maintenance etc. discussions……..WE HAVE THIS FORUM!!

I bring this up due to my many years of involvement in restoring vehicles (IN my Garage).

A lot if individuals put mileage as the primary reason to pay more Money to purchase…..Don’t get me wrong..It’s a factor!! But not the only criteria for value.

I have competed in several events and the majority of my wins were 1st and worst case was 2nd…….So current XJS looks good. But I drive them everyday!!! I have competed against cars with much less mileage than my latest with 111K…….(Never misses a beat).

Anyway before I go off Track with too much rambling…Is this something that could FLY or if you have a better idea ….let’s hear.

Thanks

Softball60/Paul

I noticed that the keys seem to be missing for the fuel cap and the key fob. Didn't all of the later Xjs's come with the alarm security system fitted as standard, and the fuel cap have the flat key ?

@vmaxie asked me if I would look at the car so earlier this week I made an appointment to see the car today. The salesman said he would have the car pulled out of the showroom so I could test drive it. The car had not been pulled out of the showroom and this is a very urban dealership with a small parking lot and cars double and triple parked so I did not want to wait while they moved 20 cars to get it out. Sorry, @vmaxie .

Here is what I can tell you. There are some pretty severe dings in the doors. Passenger side:

The cigarette lighter is broken and the insert is missing:

There is some sloppy over-spray on the center console passenger side. I didn't notice it until I sat in the driver's seat - then it was very noticeable. My guess is they re-dyed the seats or the center armrest from a spray can but I am not positive about that.

Front air dam has some gouges but they were not super noticeable unless you were laying on the ground. I was laying on the ground.

Some weird wear around the bottom of the rear window, driver's side. The passenger side had the same issue.

A line worn in the top, right about the middle of the top. View from the passenger side but goes all the way to the driver's side. This is 1 of 2.

Ski slope cracks. They appear minor to me.

Driver side front suspension, looking towards the rear. The passenger side looked similar.
My opinion - that's a lot of rust for a car with 55k miles.

Driver side rear radius arms, ahead of the rear wheel.

These two dings on the driver's door were the worst.

Here is the video of the top opening and closing. I would be concerned about the pumping noises when the top was closing.

Other items:
- All the date codes on the tires were facing in so I could not read them. I know Michelin's have a tendency to check the sidewalls but I would plan on buying tires sooner rather than later.
- The trunk had the tool kit and jack but no tonneau cover
- The interior looked very nice. The seats were all in excellent shape.

Finally, they had an old "Brick" Volvo sitting next to it that had race tires, a nice Recaro interior, and I'm going to guess a 5.0 was stuffed under the hood. I had to pry my wife out of that - she feel in love on the spot.

All things considered - for what they are asking price-wise vs the condition of this, I would pass.
