Modern Equivalents for the Oils and Fluids
Good morning. Was running through one of the ROM's that was recently posted, and, while patiently still hibernating on getting my own Jag, I was looking at the recommended Lubricants and Fluids section. I noticed some to most are not modern and available anymore and spent some time trying to figure out what the modern products would look like at my local parts store. Do I have these right:
Engine Oil: Mobil 115W-50 5W-50
Transmission: Dexron III from a reputable brand
Limited Slip Diff: Castrol Axle LS 80W-90
Power Steering: Dexron III
Brake Fluid: DOT 3 or 4 but not silicone based 5.
Coolant: Peak OE European Vehicles Blue 50/50
For reference I am shooting for a pre-facelift HE version of which the most common I've seen available are 88-90 for sale today.
Also I saw that 91 RON gas is the minimum which here in the states is 87 Octane correct? I always read about running Premium in these. Is that not the case? I know engine health and timing settings and temperature will play into this. Would I be best served shooting for 89 Octane?
Thanks everyone.
One day..........

Put in the highest octane you can get. The others are correct, but I believe (jumps into reinforced conrete bunker) 15w oils are too thick for a cold V12 and that 10W is better. Personally I use 5W 30. Also use fully synthetic, it is a far better oil IMO. When I had my sump off after 10 -odd years it was clean as a whistle.
But I warn you, oil is the subject with WIDEST spread of different views!

There's also differing viewpoints on petrol grade. In the UK, the lowest grade petrol we have is 95 RON, which I think is 91 in the US? However, every classic Jaguar owner that I know put either 98 or 99 RON in their classic cars. The advantage being not just the octane rating, but also the additives, and the lowest level of ethanol (less than 5%). Why did Jaguar state that it could be run on the cheapest fuel? Because, technically it could run on that. In the same way I can buy a bottle of wine for £3 if I look hard enough. But I choose not to!
