Default My XJS - What do you Think!!

My original post has been out for a couple of days but no responses…It seemed that there was some interest in this type of format,
Maybe it got lost in the old post, so I thought I would do a new and separate post.

I am 76 yrs. old
Self taught since 1961 and still learning everyday
Other than family cars Almost everything I have owned has been a British Sports Cars, Corvette, Fiat 124 Spyder, Mercedes 560 SL

Current Vehicle is a 1996 XJS 2+2

Please view and comment and let us know “What You Think”

All intact no bumper block rash!!

Engine compartment is spotless

I refinished the steering wheel last year

All interior panel are original no cracks or chips

111K miles on odometer

Drivers seat was completely taken apart. Each panel of leather separated replaced if deteriorated. Saved the original Leaper on Seat. Leather purchased from company in Calif. and matched beautifully. While seat apart bladder was repaired and now functions properly.

Original Convertible top (26yrs. Old) and insulation and head liner completely removed and refurbished. Head Liner was washed and reinstalled as is no issues, Horsehair Insulation cover totally disintegrated. Made a new insulation cover and installed. Top panels taken apart and restitched, Looks Like new but is starting to show age.

All wheels hand polished

Please let us know what you think and remember how this post started. Just wanted to let you know hat cars with mileage can look Great also!!!

Don’t be afraid to comment and let’s get the ball rolling!!

Looks good, very good indeed, even from way down here.

Mileage is just a number, and I have never understood the fixation with it.

Cars were designed and buillt to be DRIVEN, and those dont do that, should not have one, MY OPINION, and I am old also, with many Jags through the years.

Looks great! Just bought a 96 with 56,000 miles. Haven't even registered it yet. Soon I hope. Sitting in my garage with the XKR.

Thanks for the feed back.

1. Like Grant stated “Mileage is just a number”,
2. “95 CAT” Maybe after my thread goes through the process you can give us a presentation on the 95 you just purchased
3. Thanks for the responses.
4. “Greg & Brinny” What would something like this sell for in your part of the world

If you go back and look at the “IDEA” posts, separate thread…..We are also looking for some potential $$$$$ dollar value you think it’s worth. The dollar value should hopefully be in your local currency.

My merc 560SL owned (11yrs.) and 250K miles, just prior to the XJS was sold to a person in Germany for a lot more than I paid for it. I might sell the XJS overseas if prices are strong.

Thanks

Softball60/Paul

I would have thought I might get a couple of questions regarding the effort on the driver seat and Convertible Top system or the Spray cab repaint of the hood (Bonnet).

Thanks

Spectacular car!
Only two flaws from what I can see.....Cam cover paint with typical blistering and left window and roof switches paint rubbed off.
I wouldn't kick it out of my garage.

Equiprx,

Thanks

You are correct on both,
1. On the cam cover the paint flaws are caused by the outgassing of the magnesium casting…..Not sure I want to touch the original surface.
2. Switches…….Yes….You have a good eye….I will either replace or try to repair.
3. What do you think its’ worth????

I haven't been following prices since I passed my XJS on to a new owner years ago.
Also it depends on where you are in the world.
What it's worth is always about what the market will bear.
This is what a dealer in California is asking for one similar.

This one needs a head gasket, so the seller claims, but condition overall is not as nice as yours.

If you need some switches I may have some in better nic.
Please contact me off line if you want more info.

Really nice looking car. I am impressed with the effort to repair the seat upholstery and top. 111.000 miles isn't that much, especially with the AJ16 engine. Better to drive the car and keep up maintenance on it then to let it sit and rot. Even if garaged it will deteriorate over time from dis use.

Sir, you are clearly a more-than-worthy steward of that fine automobile. Your approach to restoration/preservation is admirable. I do like the red roof.

Thorsen,

Possibly ???????

Thinking of buying another and starting all over.

Whereabouts in Chicago are you from. Lived in Chicago for 6 yrs. Downtown on Michigan Ave. across the street from Grant Park. Used to love driving w/my old Harley and making lots of noise!!!!!!!

A sheet of items I missed.

Just finished the convertible top pump rebuild a couple of days ago.

Hi Paul

Unless I am much mistaken, that's a 'Celebration Convertible' you've got there

$15,000 - $20,000

Orangeblossom,

Correct it is a 1996 Celebration Model.

I believe you are from England……What might be the sell price over there????

I sold my 1989 Merc 560SL (just prior to the XJS) to a person in Germany for an amount more than I would have received in the states.

Thanks

Softball60/Paul
