Thanks a bunch for your help. Unfortunately, I'm too far away to go get it and the shipping would be too much.
Best,
BQ

I'm trying to take advantage of the momentary spring thaw, so I want to the garage so study the engine. I've decided to block off the air injection system to give better access. I've thought more about replacing the engine, too. About how heavy is the engine with the GM400 transmission attached? Being mostly aluminum, could two people lift it off the floor and onto a trailer?
Thanks,
BQ

Default broken valve guide?

Some of ujs would like to know what happened to that valve.
Did you ever remove that head? I'm thinking the only way a valve can move sideways is if the guide is broken. Unless the valve is bent, it still should seal with the spring pressure. I agree with other members that the cost would be too high to fix that engine, but you cannot put a price on the knowledge you'd get from a tear down. Also, you could clean, box, and label the good parts, keep them, or resell them on the internet and possibly recover some of your initial investment in this car, and put it toward a newer engine.
If you choose to keep it, I'd keep it original as possible, and you can do a LOT of stuff easier with the engine out: mounts, heater hoses, power steering hoses, etc.

You have many options. You are looking at several thousand $, whether you fix that one, or buy one in better condition, so it seems a toss-up. If you so choose, you could re-sell it. Have you tried listing it on Craigslist? you'd be surprised what some might offer for that one, (parts car for their '82) you never know, even if you tell them every thing that's wrong with it. Make some money and buy a different one. You are not married to that car. And remember, not everyone reads these forums. They have no idea what you paid for it.
